Doris Kearns Goodwin at Gettysburg: A Few Inappropriate Remarks
Breitbart.com ^ | 7/1/13 | Tony Lee

Posted on 07/01/2013 12:39:15 PM PDT by cotton1706

On Sunday, a stunned audience sat in silence as Doris Kearns Goodwin turned the keynote address at the opening ceremony for the 150th anniverary of the Battle of Gettysburg into a political lecture focusing on women's and gay rights. Missing from much of her keynote: Gettysburg.

Self-centered, insular, and oblivious to the occasion, the historian who was infamously caught plagiarizing merely recycled much of what she has said before about herself in previous speeches. And her rambling, self-promoting, and borderline inappropriate lecture touched upon nearly everything except for the heroic sacrifices made on that battlefield.

In so doing, she desecrated the hallowed land on which she spoke, dishonored Gettysburg's honored dead, and disrespected the nearly 8,000 Americans in attendance who did not come to Gettysburg to hear about her life's story and a progressive history lecture.

Before even referencing President Abraham Lincoln, Kearns Goodwin started her speech by mentioning President Lyndon Johnson. In fact, more of her speech was devoted to Johnson and herself than to Lincoln, Grant, Lee, and Gettysburg. Boasting about all the presidents she has researched, Kearns Goodwin said her only worry was that in her afterlife all of the presidents about whom she has written or plagiarized will confront her to complain and point out inaccuracies in her work.

She said the first person who would confront her in her afterlife would be Lyndon Johnson, who she said would scream at her, "how come that book on the Kennedys is twice as long as the book you wrote about me?"

After briefly--and in an obligatory manner--actually mentioning Gettysburg and Lincoln's Gettysburg Address, Kearns Goodwin could not stop herself from rehashing her civil rights stories.

Sometimes I watch “meet the depressed” and they trot her out and never mention her confessed plagiarism. why? because she is a liberal. Her hijacking of the Gettysburg audience is the end of her legitimacy.

Grant wasn’t anywhere near Gettysburg. He was a thousand miles away accepting the surrender of Vicksburg.

I thought it was pretty much accepted as fact that Goodwin HAD slept with LBJ.

The truth is that she’s no historian. She’s a “Pop Historian” more interested in using creative interpretations of history to score current day political points and advance contemporary agendas. “Team of Rivals” was nothing more than an attack on GW Bush as a wartime President using revisionism of Lincoln as a tool for thinly veiled comparison.

God, how I wish Shelby Foote was still alive .

She is a fool, but why would anyone mention Grant at Gettysburg? He was still at Vicksburg.

If she did, would she have cared?

LBJ was a bigger womanizer than JFK. There’s no doubt she knew about it, possibly even sanctioned it. Iirc there was a story that when Linda Bird dumped Chuck Robb for his womanizing (including with a Playboy Playmate) momma bird was quite displeased with her daughters action ...

MustKnowHistory, please forgive this old history major
for using your space to respond to Ms Goodwin.

Dear Doris

I believe womens rights and gay rights are doing just fine
right now and Abe Lincoln would even agree. What Abe
and I are a little worked up over is the blatant unethical
and immoral acts of todays politicans and the failure of
commentators such as yourself to call them on it . I am
speaking in particularly of the current president and his
administration. You, Doris, are among those intellectuals
who believe that lies and scandals are OK if they serve
a political purpose which you endorse. That, Doris, is
not intellectual. It is just being a toady hack and our
nation will suffer in the long run whether done
by the left or right. Gay and women’s rights will take
care of themselves. You and your ilk will stand by and
watch this nation die rather than address the serious
issues.

Regards,
Sivad

Importantly, she is not a “historian”, but a “history writer”, and in academics there is a huge chasm between the two.

Historians follow some pretty strict rules to do peer reviewed histories.

History writers can write anything they want. Basically semi-fiction, or fiction supported by some facts.

And Doris Kearns Goodwin has also been caught plagiarizing other people’s works. Even history writers can have some credibility, but not plagiarists.

“JFK was hit. And hit by professionals....Oswald was nothing but a patsy.”

Unlikely.

And another conspiracy theory idiot makes himself known on Free Republic... Please stop dragging FR thru the mud with your nutball posts.

As conspiracy theories go, though, that one is pretty tame.

Or at least, as the mother of all conspiracy theories, it's familiar, even venerable.

It's not as crazy as some other things.

We watched her yesterday, and we were stunned that she carried on about herself, her boy, LBJ, and Harry Hopkins.

She quickly got in a sentence with the word love in it about Lorena Hickok and Eleanor having a room next to each other. The implication was clear and highly unnecessary in this somber and serious Gettysburg setting. It was not related to this occasion, and it was offensive, in my opinion.

We kept waiting for something important about President Lincoln and Gettysburg to be said by her. She was so awful that we were forced to change stations. Her fast rambling was too much to take.

We felt sorry for the audience sitting there who had to endure this. They were obviously intelligent people who came to Gettysburg to honor the people who fought there and to learn about the history. It was not fair that they had to listen to her.

"In so doing, she desecrated the hallowed land on which she spoke"

Nah,I don't think so. Consider the following remark:

"...The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it, far above our poor power to add or detract."

And why do we say her middle name? Is she a serial killer that we haven’t heard about?

No, then she would have to be Doris Wayne Goodwin. :)

"Thanks for warming up the car for me. Oh look - It's an Oldsmobile." ;-)
