A Dude From The Rainy Left Coast asks if I would prefer to live in a world with no gun controls or one with reasonable gun controls, and why.
We had a world with no gun controls, once. A world in which you could hop a coastwise trader in New Orleans, and get off in any port north of Guyana. With your life preserver hanging on your belt, and without as much as a raised eyebrow from anyone.
A world where wide areas of the world had four or five murders a year for every million population. Most as a result of some dude violating, or attempting to violate, the unwritten law against adultery.
That was a world where a man who wanted to could cut a stout walking stick in Calais, put a life preserver in its holster, and walk to Moscow and beyond. With the good wishes of everyone he met, including the border guards.
Today, we have what generations past called reasonable gun control. While gun control laws have become less strict, and violence has responded by becoming less frequent, we know what the results of reasonable gun control are. Sky high murder and violent crime rates as well as overmuch government hostility.
Within reason, you can have any violent crime rate you want by manipulating the gun laws. Absolute gun bans result in violent crime rates as bad as Venezuela. Or worse.
Semi-absolute gun bans with large quantities of forbidden weapons coming in from the outside results in Chicago.
And so on down the severity scale until you get to Kansas City, 1895. Which needed only modern health care and sanitation to be a near ideal place to live. And to live without idiotic, and enforced, restrictions on who could buy a gun, or where they could take it.
The Ultimate goal of the gun grabbers would be to have only the government and the criminals with a monopoly on the use of force.
The gun grabbers have admitted that their halfway measures would not solve the problems the claim to care about. And when they are honest about their intentions ( a rare event indeed) they will tell you that their current set of people controls are Just the beginning.
The question should be poised this way:
Given A Choice, Would I Choose To Live In A World With No Gun Control, Or NO Guns?
An armed society is a polite society.
+1. I am deathly sick of appeals to “reason” or “common sense.” Those terms are subjective and entirely dependent on the world view of the person uttering them. One man’s “reasonableness” is another man’s tyranny. If someone has facts-cold hard facts, not emotional appeals-I’ll listen. Otherwise, they can get lost.
Interesting story. Back in ‘87 or ‘88 a slightly-known acquaintence of mine attempted to sell me a machine gun. I was smart enough to turn it down and get scarce, even when it was basically offerred for free. I never saw the guy again and have no idea what his angle was. I figure either it was a sting or a scared idiot with an illegally converted semiauto gun thst he was in a hurry to lose. The Lord knows I’ve met enogh of the latter over the years.
No, the drug war has actually accomplished what was intended. These days we have a whole new economy. Some economists that I have spoken with use the term ‘justice economy’ others say it is the ‘law enforcement’ economy.
It includes the massive expansion of police forces, the number of judges, bailiffs, court clerks, parole boards, prison guards, prison health care, prison food services and required transportation in all 50 states. This amounts to one seriously big expansion in the number of public employees. Unions are smiling across the nation.
Also legislators now are encouraged to make many more ‘feel good’ laws that don’t accomplish anything but do give law enforcement ‘just cause’ to arrest an otherwise law abiding adult or minor.
I realize that I haven’t included anything about the ATF or the DEA and their ever increasing budgets but you’ll have to research their growth for yourself.
This is all meant to “control the masses” and in my opinion it does a superb job at making everyone slightly nervous when they are in the company of law enforcement officials because we all know that we can be arrested at any moment for the slightest reason. If that’s not effective crowd control, tell me what is.
Heh, glad your ‘spidey senses’ were on that day. If a deal is too good to be true, watch out.
I get the same feeling when I hear the words ‘reasonable’ and ‘common sense’ coming from ANY politician.
They are out there..... Batfageeee’s are in that business of course yet 99% of such events are just as you described.... Just an idgit trying to recoup his nickel before he does a dime of time....
Stay Safe Jboot !
The appeals to 'reasonable' are nothing less than the same as an appeal to the reasonableness of a fist.
