Hmmmmmmmmmm, that sounds like a good reason to require one for anything important, like renting a movie or voting...
This already exists, and it is an utter failure. Both George W. Bush and Al Gore wanted it.

The REAL ID Act of 2005, Pub.L. 109–13, 119 Stat. 302, enacted May 11, 2005, was an Act of Congress that modified U.S. federal law pertaining to security, authentication, and issuance procedures standards for the state driver’s licenses and identification (ID) cards, as well as various immigration issues pertaining to terrorism.
The law set forth certain requirements for state driver’s licenses and ID cards to be accepted by the federal government for “official purposes”, as defined by the Secretary of Homeland Security. The Secretary of Homeland Security has currently defined “official purposes” as presenting state driver’s licenses and identification cards for boarding commercially operated airline flights and entering federal buildings and nuclear power plants.
The REAL ID Act implements the following:
1) Title II of the act establishes new federal standards for state-issued driver licenses and non-driver identification cards.
2) Changing visa limits for temporary workers, nurses, and Australian citizens.
3) Funding some reports and pilot projects related to border security.
4) Introducing rules covering “delivery bonds” (similar to bail bonds but for aliens who have been released pending hearings).
5) Updating and tightening the laws on application for asylum and deportation of aliens for terrorist activity.
6) Waiving laws that interfere with construction of physical barriers at the borders.
As of April 2, 2008, all 50 states have either applied for extensions of the original May 11, 2008 compliance deadline or received unsolicited extensions.
As of October 2009, 25 states have approved either resolutions or binding legislation not to participate in the program, and with President Obama’s selection of Janet Napolitano (a prominent critic of the program) to head the Department of Homeland Security, the future of the law remains uncertain, and bills have been introduced into Congress to amend or repeal it.
The most recent of these, dubbed PASS ID, would eliminate many of the more burdensome technological requirements but still require states to meet federal standards in order to have their ID cards accepted by federal agencies.
Just use it to enslave the peasants more.
I was thinking the same thing. The GOP should jump on the bandwagon and steer this national ID card into a Voter ID card. Take control of the discussion and the dems will flee from it quicker than Hillary can avoid giving a straight answer under oath.
The net result of Real ID's failure is that Americans in some states have to show more forms of proof to get their driver's licenses and illegals still get their licenses without any impediments in states like Washington.

It was always about a federal ID card. One of its biggest backers was Al Gore, who seriously proposed it as not just that, but a gateway to a “cash-free society”, where all money was in what amounted to government controlled computers, even if it was still officially in banks.
Socialists learned of the failure of direct nationalization and control by government, because of Lenin’s experiments; but the Nazis’ fascist economics gave them the idea, popularized in the New Deal, of the “government-private partnership”. Government would order business what to do, but it was up to business to do it.
To this day, most of American Agribusiness is still using this fascist model. But the Democrats want to radically expand it to all of society.
For this they need total control over personal information, the flow of information, and control over all financial resources. Not direct, in most cases, but via corporate proxies.
REAL ID was poorly sold to the public as an antiterrorism gesture by W. Bush, who agreed with many of its authoritarian government concepts, far beyond terrorism or illegal immigration.
But in the final analysis, it is no different than gun control as an effort to control the people by the central government. Even the Russians often tell us this, because they know it from old.
SS, Birth Certificate, Passport, etc. Just used old license.

I went through many of the same things you did when I relocated here in PA. from Ohio...and now we are making plans to leave here for GA...so we will prepare our selves for this all over again...
every state in this Nation should have voter ID Laws..but will never happen when democrats and Liberals control...I’ve never been ashamed of my country as I now am..and not ashamed to admit it either..

But damn. I never changed my name on my SS Card when I got married in 1974. I haven't seen my SS Card since before then. Used to be the number was important, not the piece of paper it was printed on. Have to jump through those hoops as well. :( There are documents they will accept with my SSN, but then I need proof of residency docs (Auto Registration, utility bills, etc).
And what's the deal about those 59 or older only able to get a 5 year DL? Sounds like age discrimination to me. :) I will be 59 in April. Have 1/2 mind get a replacement before then so I can beat the man's play clock & get another 10 yr DL.
If it comes from this administration......it’s a bad thing.

Click on the very names of the sources quoted. They’re already there.
The ID you posted in NOT mandatory, but optional. The one being proposed would be MANDATORY for ALL US Citizens. Before you tell people to “STFU,” perhaps it would be beneficial to be more discriminating.
