2013 is making it difficult to avoid one of America’s greatest sins—slavery. We’ve just marked the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation, and a plethora of films, documentaries and TV specials are scheduled to address slavery.

Because some people like to look upon it as a credit card with no debt limit. No matter how much penance is paid back, the demands for payout never stop.

Of course slavery was odious. Of course ending it was a good thing. However the U.S. was not unique in the institution (or in the corollary of racism), yet we seem to be uniquely hung up on it.

The earliest known record of slavery is The Code of Hammurabi, 1760 BC but it is possible that slavery actually stretches back to Lower Egypt where the Libyan people enslaved a San-like tribe. That means, at the time of America's founding slavery had been rampant for thousands of years.

By 1865 America had written the 13th Amendment to the U. S. Constitution prohibiting slavery throughout the country. It took Americans less than 80 years (1787-1865) to outlaw slavery completely.

There are STILL countries that are thousands of years old that condone slavery to this day. So don't tell me that Americans are racist slavers. There is no other country that from the beginning embraced more diversity and fought harder for freedom.

Slavery goes back before civilization to when man first domesticated animals. Hunters and subsistence planters don’t have enough work, or if they did no ability to easily catch nor keep people. Herders did, and it is they who inaugurated the institution. So, basically it has been around ever since it could be around, and hasn’t disappeared since.

Almost 5% of the slaves shipped from Africa to the New World were brought to the US and Canada. Clearly America deserves all the blame.

The U.S. still has slavery - human trafficking for the sex trade - without condoning it.

There are over 27,000,000 slaves in the world today, and not just in Muslim countries. Pastor Louie Giglio and the annual Passion Conference is very active in fighting human trafficking and other forms of slavery, which is why he was invited to give the inaugural benediction - before he was disinvited because he preached against homosexuality in 1995.

By April of this year, look for youth to be wearing t-shirts and baseball caps with a red 'x' on them that looks as if it was applied with a paintbrush. That signifies their support for the End It (Slavery) Movement.
