America the beautiful, with all its celebration of democratic freedoms, has become a place where children are gunned down in their first-grade classrooms, and teenagers are killed walking home with Skittles and iced tea.
The latest blight on the nation's social consciousness is a massacre of unconscionable proportion: A lone gunman, identified as 20-year-old Adam Lanza, entered a Connecticut elementary school last week and used a semi-automatic rifle to unleash carnage by killing 20 children, all age 6 or 7, and six adults -- schoolteachers and staff. Lanza had killed his own mother in her home, reportedly shooting her in the face, before traveling to the school.
This follows a series of similar tragedies: from the 2010 shooting outside a Safeway in Tuscon, Ariz., to the Dark Knight movie theater killings in Colorado, the massacre at a Sikh temple in Wisconsin -- and eerily familiar stories in Oregon, Washington and California.
The common denominator? Guns.
The recent shootings in Newtown, Conn., have prompted heated conversation about America's firearms obsession. The country seems to have a love affair with guns -- and it is the most vulnerable among us who all too often pay the price.
Sybrina Fulton, mother of slain teenager Trayvon Martin -- whose death at the hands of unofficial neighborhood watchman George Zimmerman caused a national uproar -- spoke exclusively to The Root following the Newtown school massacre. "I feel bad for the families of these little boys and girls," she said. "The parents have a long road of healing ahead."(continued)

I seem to recall that Lanza used a pistol for all the killings. Does anyone know if he used the Bushmaster to do any killings?
The stories said they found the Bushmaster in his trunk.
But we don’t need no steenkin facts.
Chief Med examiner said all from a rifle.xcept the one to his noggin
Thug-life wanna-bes should be able to beat down Neighborhood Watch folks with impunity. How dare they arm themselves and fight back...
I’d like to ask Trayvon’s mother how many of the kids shot in Newtown were beating Adam Lanza’s head into the pavement at the time he pulled the trigger on them.
According to the coroner he only used a pistol on himself. The victims were all killed with the AR.
A crazy kid went into this school and murdered those children. Each night many backs are killed in America’s large cities .If we used logic instead of BS we would come to the conclusion that crazies should be locked in institutions and guns should be banned from inner city blacks.
Many of these cities such as Chicago, New York, and Philadelphia, Washingtob DC already ban guns and we see that doesn’t work.
No they want to take guns away from people who have no intention of ever shooting anyone unless in defense of their life.
As a matter of fact no matter what this mother says her son was a thief and drug user, and the Skittles and Tea he was getting was going to be used to get High by mixing it with Codeine cough syrup, and the gun used by Zimmerman was in self-defense.
Please do not bring in a failed Mother and use her to give
credibility to the gun grabbing agenda of the author.

Three reactions:
First, the common denominator is gun free zones. All these shootings except the attempt on Gifford's life took place in a posted gun free zone. And that crime took place in an area the shooter could reasonably assume others would be disarmed and no one was carrying.
Second, the common denominator in a million or more social interactions in America before noon today was that one or more of the people involved was armed and absolutely nothing unpleasant happened.
Third, this guy points out that the "common denominator" in a group of shootings is that guns were involved, and he gets paid for that? Does he feel like he made a real sharp leap of logic there?
and teenagers are killed walking home with Skittles and iced tea.
If the person who was shot was (as the evidence seems to indicate) beating the head of the person who shot him against concrete, I could care less what he had in his pocket. If the shooter basically killed him in cold blood as the prosecution claims, I doubt very much he would have failed to do so if he had a kitchen knife in his pocket instead of a handgun.
Liberalism is intellectually stunted, but it really seems to boldly go into new realms of stupidity when gun control is the topic of discussion.
Uh, no. The common denominator is sick people who use inanimate objects to murder innocent people.
Exactly.
That bothers me alot since he was only on scene following the deaths and had absolutely no access to the bodies other than observing bullet holes. How does one discerne the difference between say a 9-mm bullet hole or a .223 bullet hole without actually having the bullets verified by a munitions expert?
Who cares what Trayvon’s Mother thinks!? All of a sudden she’s a gun expert? An expert on violence? She raised a gold toothed, ghetto thug. She doesn’t know jack sh**!
Another common denominator is each sicko was taught by the culture polluting democrat controlled federal school system.
Dang it! I tried to hit the “like” button but remembered FR doesn’t have one.
Only a "munitions expert" can do so?
Bump!
That and phsycotropic drugs, a Godless society....the list is unfortunately too long.
The MEs presser said he used the .223 for all murders; handguns never used. The long gun in the trunk was a shotgun. I posted vid of cops racking-out shells.
My 12/29 post:
According to the MEs presser, he used to AR-15 to do all the killings. They found another long gun in the trunk. Look at the shells being racked-out; looks like 12ga.
This article says he had the AR-15 and 2 handguns w/ him, and a shotgun was found in the car:
