“I’ve noticed in elections past that DU does not allow access to even VIEW their site during elections unless you have an account. We should do the same!”
Why? Why imitate the losers at DU?
I like the idea of keeping page-load times down, but otherwise, this seems like a bad idea. It indicates a lack of confidence. If Romney is winning—especially big—why would FR need the “protection”?
I like the idea
But it seems like censorship to me, which is more DU's province. I'd vote no.
I thought it always worked this way....and should to prevent posting of deceptive information.
If FR does not work this way it reduces my faith in the validity of posts.
Please announce the truth about Free Republic.
Well, there’s a few problems.
Even if the site is closed, it’s still possible to hammer on the doors, so heaps of web traffic may act as denial of service. You have to allow some access just to see if the incoming actually is logging in.
On the other hand, it might be possible to set the site recognition further out and deny access on IP, which is always difficult but sitemeter uses a mechanism like that for the user to sign up for treatment according to his own ip-number. Reject on basis of a non-known IP is light, processwise.
Does this site experience server load issues when traffic increases, though? I’m no programmer, but the FR is pretty basic text with some static images here and there.
The DUmbos are an eyesore of multimedia insanity.
I don’t think anyone will be able to log in tomorrow after 6 pm, so it isn’t going to matter anyway.
With bridged Cisco CP-DQPSK cards for OC-768 up/down network speeds...
I don’t understand st00pid. Try again.
What, and miss all the fun of their heads exploding???
;^)
Glad you decided not to quit FR
::sigh::: Third freakin attempt...
I don’t foresee such changes being implemented, but I’ll opine.
If it helps with traffic issues, I’m fine with disallowing new signups until after all returns are in.
WRT blocking mere lurkers from site access - I see no need to act as if we FReepers have something to be ashamed of. The DUmp is hardly an example to emulate.
Besides, FReepers themselves may be trying to take quick anonymous peeks throughout the day (ignoring of course that the site’ll be a parking lot even w/out logging in).
I don’t think FR should shut anybody out; I was a lurker for a few years before actually joining and I like the idea that this site is available to anybody who wants to read it and get educated. We are not at all like the Dumb-o-crats and their stinking site (thanks to the Grace of God) and therefore should be proud to have a site that anybody can check in with and see what we all think. I’m proud to be part of FREEREPUBLIC.
Everyone keep in mind that Glenn Beck, and The Blaze TV on the Dish Network will be covering Live election results. If FR is overloaded, at least that’s a place to get truly unfiltered info. Fox will be my last resort. They want the results drawn out as long as possible for viewership. That’s why they keep bouncing around to different polls that show the election to be tied. Every day they quote a new pollster.
Even if Romney gets 500 EV’s the MSM won’t tell us until 2AM. It will still be “too close to call” up until then!!
Not a good idea.
The MSM, MSNBC, FOXNEWS, Hannity, Rush, O’Reilly, Matthews, Mr. Maddow et al would be freaking out with not being able to see what the direction and mood of the Conservative Tea Party Movement is.
This is where they have their drones go first thing every day to see the truth so they can either report it or spin it, depending on their political leanings.
There would be alot of sputtering and pauses as they try to think for themselves with out the help of The Premire Conservative Website on the www which is FreeRepublic.com!
Depending on how the software is designed, that may not reduce the load. The software may not even be designed to accommodate that ability.
