The Aurora Tragedy, the Tea Party, and Gun Control
Principles & Policy ^ | July 20th, 2012

Shortly after midnight, gunman James Holmes attacked a crowded movie theater screening The Dark Knight Rises in Aurora, Colorado. Holmes, age 24, is accused of murdering 12 people and wounding 71 more with a canister of tear gas and multiple firearms, according to the most recent reports. He is currently in police custody after surrendering to authorities without a fight once they arrived on the scene. While I believe strongly in the importance of the “innocent until proven guilty” doctrine of the American justice system, there’s pretty much zero doubt that Holmes committed this crime, so I won’t bother to use the words “alleged” or “suspected” here.

This act of senseless violence is the sort that ought to bring our nation together. It ought to remind us of our mortality, the fragility of life, and the importance of maintaining a peaceful and stable society. Unfortunately, as has been the case with most shootings over the last couple of decades, the tragedy was immediately politicized.

As the morning news began to disseminate additional information about the Aurora shooting hours later, Brian Ross of ABC News suggested that Holmes was a member of the Tea Party. He admitted that they weren’t yet sure that the James Holmes of the Aurora Tea Party was the same James Holmes as the shooter, but this caveat received little attention as social media sites such as Twitter and Facebook flooded with accusations of a “tea party massacre.”

The Aurora WHAT?

This wasn’t a tragedy. King Lear is a ‘tragedy’.

The correct word is ‘atrocity’

No doubt after a fair trial, perhaps years from now, he will be found guilty and sentenced to DEATH BY OLD AGE. The families and friends of the victims will be forced to pay for his upkeep for the next 75 years of appeals.

“Send an email to ABC “News” about the false “Tea Party” association...”
__________

People were saying it was Muslims, Tea Party, the Dems, Occupiers and they were all wrong and they were all stupid for opening mouths before anyone knew anything. I think that you are going to have a hard time getting people to believe that it’s really the Tea Party that is the victiom today. Let it go.

“The correct word is ‘atrocity’”

“Murder” also comes to mind.

Already sent an email to George and Brian saying they should be fired. If nothing else it might give them pause the next time they do something so idiotic and stupid. Just hoping.
