Complete Disaster Non-Preparedness: DC Grocery Stores Out , Gas Unavailable, Grid-Down Heat Rages
SHTF Plan ^ | 7/2/12 | Mac Slavo

Posted on 07/02/2012 4:43:44 PM PDT by Kartographer

We’ve seen it time and again over the last decade. An emergency strikes and panic grips the city or region for days or weeks on end.

We saw a complete breakdown of emergency response and law & order during Hurricane Katrina. The 2011 Snowpocalypse on the east coast led to runs on grocery stores and empty shelves within a matter of hours. Widespread blackouts during Hurricane Ike left large sections of the Houston power grid down for up to four weeks. In all these cases gas was almost impossible to find, what was in your pantry was what you had until food distribution resumed, local water was not safe for consumption, and government response was limited to reinstating essential services first and foremost.

The bottom line, as Jesselyn Radack of the Government Accountability Project notes, is that after billions have been spent by Department of Homeland Security, FEMA and local law enforcement, we are no more prepared today than we were the day before September 11, 2011.

“Well, I am laughing.”

All well and good for husband and you, but I was the one on the phone with 911.

My husband was an ex-Marine and he knew more jokes than anyone I ever met. He was wonderful.

Go to any prepper thread on FR. At least a half dozen show up belittling preppers or making fun of them.

In my AO, new services and service upgrades have to be buried, by code.

Yep. It was an extension to the Rural Electrification Act. I can't remember the year (kicking myself, thinking 1969), but did substantial research in the area. There were a great deal of unforeseen corrosion issues with the neutrals. Truly unforeseen.

One thing they will do that irks me is how they clear the lines. As they reenergize the distribution system, they will fry those branch circuits that still have trees on them. It is lazy. It is dangerous, but efficient. They should warn people to leave everything off and unplugged. It is going to be a mess.

People really need to sit down and play a mind game. The game is where does my power come from. I suppose the governors and mayors of Washington and Maryland have never gotten past the light switch.

My opinions is there will not be power till next week for most places. At least reliable electricity.

Lived in Gaithersburg for two years during the reign of the "Crack Mayor" of Washington. LOL.

I suspect it has something to do with ‘handicap accessibility’ or some such federal rigamarol as that

Sort of related - for some reason, a nearby corner is getting a signal light along with cross walks and those silly buttons pedestrians push that never work. Of course, it all has to be handicapped accessible with the appropriate curbs and graded land and mow. Really? A wheelchair out there? What, the handicapped person is going to wheel across a narrow bridge or plow through the pastures? That's just crazy. That corner has been light free and just fine the whole time I've been alive and was fine long before that. But, noooo, someone got a bee in their bonnet and is wasting my tax dollars once again.

The “Crack Mayor?” Mayor-for-life Barry? He got reelected while in jail.

Now THAT is job security.

I HEARD! I was so happy to move away after my Wife's fellowship at the NIH. Even shopping was stressful. The best view was driving north on 270 and looking in the rear view mirror.

We had a great life together and traveled to a number of countries but home was the best.

He taught me to drink wine and cuss. We had a game where we thought of the worst word(s) to call each other and would have a contest to see who could say the worst word(s). Great fun.

I would call you a D@MN yankee, but at least you had the sense to go north. D@MN yankees are the ones that come south...

LOL.

Looks to me like never happened. I heard the DC mayor whining on the news about how long it would take to repair. Sounds like he is part of the problem.

I would still bet most government offices are equipped with back up power sources and are in full operation.

When our town’s electrcity was off for 3 weeks after a hurricane, the radio station didn’t miss a beat. They kept people informed on where to go for ice and food. People listened on battery and car radios and the station had a generator...or two.

“I heard the DC mayor whining on the news about how long it would take to repair.”

I saw him say that and he said he appreciated their work but it wasn’t acceptable. I have heard the news where line crews from a number of states have gone there to help restore the lines, so what is his problem?

Maybe he thinks they just need to flip the switches. He should go look around at lines wrapped around trees on the ground. He’s not much of a leader.

And there’s more if you want to look. I’ve been personally promised a bullet should I meet a fellow FReeper during SHTF.
