Y'know that little stamped steel doodad that connects the parking brake cable, coming from the parking brake pedal, to the two cables that each go to the brakes on each rear wheel?
Mine broke from metal fatigue. So I got a new one, fortunately, from my local dealer. It has three keyhole-shaped holes in it - one in the center, for the forward cable, and two holes on either end, one for each rear cable. It looks to me like it installs by slipping the cable stop for each cable thru the big portion of the keyhole shape, and then around to where the cable stop is bearing on the small part of the keyhole shape. You do this for each cable, forward and rear.
Of course, there's got to be a certain amount of slack in the lines. I tried doing it by pulling the parking brake pedal all the way up into the release position and then pulling the slack out of the rear cables. Obviously I'm still missing something.
If I have to pull off the rear brake drums and un-adjust the brakes to get mucho slack in the rear cables, how is this done? Any special brake tools required? Or is there some other way that doesn't involve messing with the brakes that I just don't know about?
I would follow the cable from end to end and make sure there is no adjustment point anywhere in between you missed. If you can’t find a way to get more slack from the front cable then you may need to loosen the star wheel adjusters in the rear drums. This can be done through a little window in the backing plates, but the star wheel auto adjuster is intended to go only one way as the brake shoes wear down. If you decide to try loosening it through the backing plate then you will need to push the lever out of the way that automatically adjusts the star wheel while you try and turn it The lever that auto adjusts the rear brakes also prevents the star wheel from turning backwards. Since your not familiar with what all this looks like you’re probably better off just taking the drum off so you can see what is going on in there and back the star wheel adjuster all the way back down that way. Worse case scenario, you may have to pull the rear brake shoes off and that should definitely give you the slack you need. It may only be necessary to do that on one side. It’s been many years since I played with the rear brakes on a Ford truck and my memory isn’t what it once was, but I think this is a pretty accurate description of the layout.

Forward cable I would think refers to where it attaches to the emergency brake pedal not the front brakes.
all the cables I have dealt with had a turnbuckle at some point but it has been a long time since I have dealt with one.

No where in this post is the front brake mentioned... you misread the post initially... then you misread it again and even copied and posted it. it is commendable that you can laugh at your mistake though!
