I have to say, this is my most hated and loathed 5 word sentence. Anyone who has the temerity to take control of their future though, aka practices self-reliance, has heard these words, or a derivative thereof way too many times.
When things get rough, Im coming to YOUR house!
Why do I need to prepare for anything? Ill just go to my parents house?
If the world comes to an end, Ill just get my gun and find me a Mormon.
I gotta tell you, I even hate hearing these things when they are said in jest. To me they are just as grating on me as when someone takes the Lords name in vain or drops the F-bomb. Its NOT okay for a person to make death threats, bully or harass another human beingeven if they are smiling while they do it, and not O.K. for a person to shirk their own responsibility to take care of themselves and their family.

She did not like the comment and was highly insulted ... but she got the message. She is at least learning how to can food now and recently asked me to teach her a basic firearm safety class.
That's a great start! Also, nothing better than having your own personal physician.
Just finished rereading "Patriots" and their idea of welcoming those with skills but giving a bit of charity to others and sending them on their way was interesting.
Thank God the only true blue lib I know lives in Madistan. My sister-in-law, and she’s off limits. If she came here begging, (90 miles) we’d send her away. We don’t have to worry about guns, she’s anti anything constitutional.
Yeah, you would be insane to bug out unless someone dropped a nuke on your doorstep!
You will still have the zombies coming - even the most idiotic of them know that food comes from farms - but it sounds like you have a solid base to work with, and, as engineers, you will be a valuable asset to the community.
Lay in a couple of drums of lime if you don’t have any limestone kicking about - it is useful for all sorts of things, but especially for sanitizing graves.
Thinking ahead, it might be worth looking at choke points on the various roads since you are not too far from the city. A couple of dropped trees in strategic locations will certainly slow down any incursions.
Plan for the worst and hope for the best!
We own rural property that would be an ideal get away ....... except it is bordered by a prison farm. I would not want those guys hoping the fence and asking to join us.
That sounds perfect - a rural property with a working farm next to it. Give the inmates a few days to leave (they will) and you have a food supply that also repels low lifes.
Yes, after reading the life of the Bosnia guy when in a year of turmoil, the rich are the FIRST to go. The first, and there is nothing that can save them, even if they have their own small army. You need to keep a low, secretive existence to have any hope of surviving.
You make it sound appealing, all the turnips a person could want and prisoners wanting to get as far away as they possibly could. LOL!
I’ve thought of the trees, we have hundreds of mature trees on our property. Several would deter traffic. :)
I think mostly we’re good to go. Thanks for all your additional info. You’ve reassured me. We’re on the right track. I guess sometimes you need that extra ‘you’re on the right track’
That and my son-in-laws with all their weapon training, we’re good to go.
Hell, wait till the prisoners leave, and take over the prison. What a deal!
Turnips are wonderful as animal feed, and you are going to want some fresh meat!
You have a great asset there.
That is the big plus of these threads.
We can talk, discuss preps and still maintain opsec. It is reassuring.
” Turnips are wonderful as animal feed, and you are going to want some fresh meat! “
Don’t knock the ‘lowly’ turnip for ‘people food’ — tasty greens all summer, and harvested turnips are a tasty and very nutritious food item that can be stored in any cool, dark, place overwinter with no need for any processing, canning, or freezing...

Unless you know what you're doing, there's only one road in to us. Blocking that would slow them down considerably on that side. The other side would be more difficult but I imagine the local folk would put out river patrols.
Oh, I love turnips! Especially the greens, and the neeps themself are far more nutritious than potatos.
But a mega supply of them will feed a huge number of rabbits too - a significant bonus.
We are prepping with plans into the 23rd century and have calculated that we will need one turnip.
;<)
LOL! That’s all the turnips I would want for sure!
Agree - and don’t forget that chickens not only love the greens, but they enhance egg production and quality.. (According to my SO, who keeps the little beasts... ;))
I have seriously considered dedicating my entire garden to turnips, if I were faced with a ‘survival gardening’ situation...
