The Santorum Predicament: A Sign of the Times

Former Reagan speechwriter Peggy Noonan had it just right — someone had better read Rick Santorum his Miranda rights. In the big leagues of national politics, she warns, “Everything you’ve said can and will be used against you.”

Keep in mind that Rick Santorum has said a great deal, and is still talking. In a world accustomed to bland politicians, Santorum breaks the mold. He admires conviction politicians, and he aims to be one. He speaks his mind, and then keeps on talking. On crucial issues of a moral nature, Santorum not only states his position, he explains it in detail and then goes on to present his convictions in the form of an argument. He is willing to make comprehensive statements of cultural analysis and sweeping moral judgments.more...

From the article: The truth is that the liberals who want a Santorum nomination may well be right. A candidate with Rick Santorum’s convictions may be unelectable on a national level. Peggy Noonan is right when she argues that Santorum can hardly crawl back to the political center now.

That is a ridiculous statement. This is not about his convictions, it's about the way he rubs people when he espouses them. It's not about right versus center, it's about understanding the proper role of the President and government in general in the United States. It's about liberty for all, including those who may not agree with Santorum. This is the delusion that will kill us. It's about brains, perspective, proper roles, and liberty. Nothing else.

But here's the problem. Santorum says things that don't help him politically.

If you want to get elected, you've got to be more than smart. You've got to be clever.

The Democrats and the MSM like only two clergymen. Al Sharpton, who has been given a show on MSNBC. Rev. Wright who hatred of America is consistent with their beliefs. When a Democrat hears God Damn America shouted over and over again he gets a thrill up and down his leg.

Sincere Christians and all moral men will be viciously attacked in this toxic political climate. If you don't hear the bland, phony, politically correct phrases that the MSM routinely praise then you maybe you have a man who could rescue America from its current crisis and help to turn our great country towards the right path.

It amazes me how conservatives don’t even recognize how far they’ve moved to the left. After all, we now have FReepers regularly trying to push Christianity behind closed doors where it won’t embarrass them.

Unless you’re Newt. Then you can say whatever you want, and you’ll be called bold and willing to stand up to the liberals. I’m tired of the double standard.

Santorum’s problem is that he keeps selling his message to the people who have already bought it. He has the ultra social conservative vote locked up. Stop the hard sell! It isn’t playing well to the rest of the country.

Should Santorum compromise his principles? No, not at all.

But I'd rather have a winner that chooses his words carefully than a loser that says exactly what's on his mind.

It's unfortunate that it has to be that way, but that's the reality.

So true. Bachmann mentioned getting gas prices down to 2 dollars after election and she was demonized on FR, but “do no wrong” Newt says 2.50 and suddenly it is brilliant. Ridiculous. I always thought that FREEPERS were the most conservative in US, but after the treatment of Bachmann and Santorum, I don’t think that is true anymore. I think they are moderates.

Amen! I agree. I like Newt. I like Santorum better.

Many if not all of Newt’s supporters on here and other places are just sickening in their sycophancy. They remind me of supporters of Crazy Uncle Paul.

Newt would have done a lot better without some of those nasty angry supporters of his.

” - - - It amazes me how conservatives don’t even recognize how far they’ve moved to the left.”

I call it the “DC Three Step: three giant steps to the Left, and one small step to the Right.” Note: others call it “Bipartisan Compromise,” or “governing from the center.”

For a wider perspective, just look at the Presidential Campaign speeches of Liberal Bobby Kennedy warning against LBJ’s “Great Society” (=Medicare, etc).

Liberal Bobby warned against the danger of “putting all eyes on Washington.”

Fast forward to the Reign of Dictator Baby-Doc Barak, and you can see how effective the DC 3-Step has been.

BTW, could the DC 3-Step have been effective without the Cave-In support by our sorry RINOs?

Actually I don’t think it’s about moderate and conservative. This whole Newt FRingrich thing has been very helpful in understanding FR.

The bitterly anti-Santorum FRingrichers illustrate what we’ve always known—that large segments of the “conservative” world have accepted much of the sexual revolution—that is, the idea that sex can be understood free of procreation. Santorum is a constant burr in their saddles, a reminder of what we all know, deep down, that sex is about procreation and cannot not be about procreation, though it can and is also about other things.

And that, once one begins to view sex as separated from procreation, a whole lot of other stuff follows from it.

The FRingrich mantra is that it’s Santorum’s fault for not being “more careful.” He’s as careful and solid as any of the candidates, well-tested in the public glare, able to handle himself without teleprompters and notes.

But the CONTENT of his positions offends the daylights out of the sex-separated-from-procreation crowd, both the Right-wing and the Left-Wing SSP crowds. And the MSM portrays him as never talking about anything except sexual morality issues. That’s simply false and, were it someone with whom the Right-wing SSP folks AGREED, they’d immediately point out that he is being portrayed as something he is not.

But, since the MSM distortion of Santorum suits their “I hate traditional sexual morality” mantra, they glom on to the MSM distortion.

It’s disgusting. BUt it’s useful in that it reveals to those of us who will hang on to traditional morality even though it costs us our livelihoods and lives, just who we can trust. It reveals to us that the libertarian “conservative” Right-wing SSPers will, in the end, hang us out to dry.

It reveals fault lines in the “conservative” world that we all knew were there but never believed they were as deep and dangerous as they are. But they are deep and dangerous and, regardless who becomes the next president, will, in the long-run, doom us all. There just aren’t enough people who want to conserve traditional morality to turn the country around anymore. It should have been possible to maintain the tenuous alliance with the SSPers on the Right, the alliance between “fiscal” and “social” conservatives.

But this primary season has revealed that that alliance is next to dead. We will all pay the price for it. The “Newt-at-any-cost” scorched earth campaign will not by itself doom us, but it’s the canary in the gold mine that sheds light on the future. The Enemy will have a field day dividing and conquering us.

And the “fiscals” will, petulantly, blame it all on us social traditionalists.
