Romney frets Gingrich's attacks could deflate win
Washington Examiner ^ | January 30, 2012 | Paul Bedard

Posted on 01/30/2012 12:25:59 PM PST by Cincinatus' Wife

Confident of victory in the Florida primaries tomorrow but afraid it might not be big enough to derail challenger Newt Gingrich, Mitt Romney's team is moving to play down talk he will win by 10 points or more. "The win will wind up big, but we're not going to get double digits," said a key advisor.

Several polls today have Romney's lead increasing to a Real Clear Politics average of 12 percent. Only three of nine of the most recent polls have Romney's lead in single numbers, with the highest being a 20 point lead in a Suffolk University poll released over the weekend.

What's driving the Romney team to downplay expectations are indications that the nasty campaign is angering voters and might put the brakes on the surge of Romney voters to the polls. "Romney's message is clearly resonating in Florida, but the race has been very fluid and Gingrich's negativity is bringing the discourse down," said the advisor. As a result, he added, the vote could be depressed.

Romney acknowledged the turn to the negative, telling NBC’s “Today” show that his campaign was forced to respond to a negative salvo by Gingrich that helped the former House speaker win last week’s South Carolina primary.

“We were being whaled on by Speaker Gingrich and didn’t respond well in South Carolina,” Romney said. “So we decided to respond. We made it clear if people want change in Washington you have to bring in someone from outside Washington. Both the change in tactic as well as the message have had a real impact in Florida.”

Later Monday, Romney told a crowd in Dunedin, Florida, that Gingrich’s attacks revealed a degree of desperation.

“He has been flailing around a bit trying to go after me for one thing or the other,” Romney said. “You just watch it and shake your head. It has been kind of painfully revealing to watch.”

They both are complaining about each other. It is embarrassing. Not a negative word on Obama at all. It is all about the two of them and how mean each of them have been towards each other. I wish we had better candidates to chose from.

Romney team has a helluva lot of nerve attacking Newt as making the campaign negative

IIRC Newt didn't start this pissing contest.

Romney THINKS we are going to forget about the tactics he has been using... NOT GOING TO HAPPEN and it’s not going to happen that I forget who participated WITH him either!

They HATE the Tea Party and many of his ‘advisors’ have SAID AS MUCH...

******

A pro-Mitt Romney ad, which was placed on the Florida television airwaves by a group called Restore Our Future, fiercely attacks former House Speaker Newt Gingrich.

Gingrich is assailed in the ad for having “a ton of baggage” in the form of ethics violations and for having received consulting payments from Freddie Mac. Another ad from the same group rebukes him for supposedly making mention of Ronald Reagan’s name too frequently and without merit.

A stream of negative attack ads costing tens of millions of dollars have flooded Florida’s airwaves, and the vast majority of the commercials are being financed by a Super PAC that is seeking to lower the poll numbers of the former House Speaker.

http://www.newsmax.com/Hirsen/Romney-Gingrich-SuperPAC-ads/2012/01/30/id/425971

******

Restore Our Future is a political action committee (PAC) created to support Mitt Romney in the 2012 U.S. Presidential election. A so-called Super PAC, Restore Our Future is permitted to raise and spend unlimited amounts of corporate, union, and individual campaign contributions under the terms of the Citizens United Supreme Court decision.

Restore Our Future was founded by Romney aides in 2010. Charles Spies, the group’s treasurer and former general counsel for Romney’s 2008 campaign for the Republican Presidential nomination, described Restore Our Future as “an independent effort focused on getting Romney elected president.”[1] The group reported raising over $12 million in the first half of 2011, in the form of large donations from approximately 90 wealthy individuals and corporations. Spies declined to discuss specific contributors to the PAC.

As of of August 2011[update], the largest individual contributor to Restore Our Future was John Paulson, a billionaire and hedge fund manager who is, according to Politico, “famous for [having enriched] himself by betting on the collapse of the housing industry.” An additional million dollars came from W Spann LLC, a corporation with no record of actual business activities. W Spann LLC was incorporated, donated to the PAC, and then dissolved in a matter of months, attracting concerns from election-watchdog groups and campaign-finance experts about the use of dummy corporations to shield large campaign contributions from public scrutiny.

Notice the number of undecided. They are enough to make the difference..If they vote for the underdog instead of leader Newt wins....Any statistics on this?

Problem is the early voting has already been influenced by the lies in Romney’s ads and it won’t matter if those voters now realize the truth

The good news is that Romney is only up 12 percent in early voting and absentee ballots so if the primary voters on Tuesday give Newt 12 percent above Romney that makes it a tie and if they give more to Newt he will win. Oh I don’t think that will happen but the closer the race the better. I guess it really doesn’t matter as far as delegates because Romney will have 49 additional delegates tomorrow night. Then it is on to Nevada where Gingrich is just starting on Wednesday. Romney has been there working a year so I don’t know if Newt can get together in two days. We will see though.

Restore Our Future as of Jan. 1 had spent $4.1 million. As of Friday, its total stood at $11.3 million. The rest came from a group calling itself “Citizens for a Working America” which bought ads supporting Romney.

“Winning Our Future” has spent $4.6 million, a huge increase since Iowa, when it had spent less than $800,000.

Unlike the other organizations, the pro-Romney group is moving aggressively into Florida, the site of the next primary. Of the $11.3 million Restore Our Future has spent to date, $4.9 million has gone to direct mail and advertising in Florida, nearly all of it in opposition to Gingrich.

The group made an ad buy of $1.5 million on Wednesday in the state.

Mitt Romney’s $12 Million Mystery Super-PAC Man

Republican strategist Carl Forti has been described, variously, as “Karl Rove’s Karl Rove” (Politico), “one of the smartest people in politics you’ve never heard of” (Karl Rove), and “the Alexander the Great of the Republican independent expenditure world” (Republican operative Bradley Blakeman). You can add one more to the list: President Obama and the Democrats’ worst nightmare in 2012. A pioneer in the post-Citizens United world of super-PACs and dark money, Forti is one of the lead architects of the GOP’s outside-spending strategy and an operative who has for years tested the boundaries of campaign finance law.

Forti first waded into the outside-money wars while working for the National Republican Congressional Committee. During the 2006 election cycle, he managed an $82 million independent-expenditure campaign—the largest in the committee’s history. Through the Black Rock Group, the strategic communications firm he cofounded, Forti has gone on to advise an all-star roster of conservative outside-spending groups, including the 60 Plus Association (the “conservative AARP”) and Americans for Job Security. Forti is also the political director of American Crossroads and advocacy director of Crossroads GPS, the Rove-inspired outfits that reported spending nearly $39 million together during the midterms. The groups have already begun running ads bashing Obama and vulnerable Democrats and plan to dump $240 million into 2012 races.

Most recently, Forti helped launch Restore Our Future, a pro-Mitt Romney super-PAC that raised $12 million in the first half of 2011. “I don’t know of anybody who’s got as important of a role with the major outside organizations, both in 2010 and in 2012,” says the group’s treasurer, Charles Spies.

This reminds me of when Carter became desperate in his last debate against Reagan and became very mean and nasty.

A commentator said, “Carter lost the only thing he had going for him....that he was a nice guy”

At best I hope its a Pyrrhic victory in FL.

He is a horrible campaigner. I think that is why he never ran state wide. He only ran in his district. He makes some really dumb mistakes. Now why would he use old information? Who does that? If it wasn’t for the debates he would have dropped out a long time ago.

So will you be contributing to the Zerobama campaign after Romney accepts the Republican nomination. Not voting to get rid of Obama is a no vote to keep him in office. Right now I would vote for anyone not named Obama because I actually do consider myself a patriot who loves my country and my grandchildren more than my pride..
