National Poll: Gingrich 37, Romney 28
Weekly Standard ^ | January 27, 2012 | Daniel Halper

In the latest NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll, Newt Gingrich has a sizable lead over his Republican rival Mitt Romney. NBC reports:

Gingrich leads Romney 37 percent to 28 percent nationally among registered Republicans likely to vote in the primaries; Rick Santorum is in third with 18 percent, and Ron Paul is fourth with 12 percent.

There is a bit of a problem for Gingrich, however. "Though Gingrich is the preferred candidate of GOP primary voters, he performs the worst of all Republican candidates tested against Obama, including Santorum," NBC reports.

Romney fares best against the president, trailing Obama by six points among registered voters, 49 percent to 43 percent. That’s a four-point improvement for the president from a month ago.

Obama, however, beats Gingrich by a whopping 18 points, 55-37 percent, expanding the president’s 11-point lead a month ago.

Santorum also loses to Obama, but by a narrower margin, 53-38 percent, than Gingrich.

But there is also good news for Gingrich. "Gingrich is also viewed as the most electable candidate by GOP primary voters. He leads Romney 2-to-1 among those who picked electability as mattering most to them in a candidate. He holds a narrow lead, 46-44 percent, among those say views on issues matter most," says NBC.

The poll was released last night, so it does not take into account last night's debate in Florida.

Big difference between “should be elected” and “electable.”

That seems to remove "most-electable" from Romney's reason for running and perhaps the reason for the tidal wave of hit pieces on Newt yesterday.

This was released before the debate.

I agree with your assessment of Romney in the debate.

if this was only Florida

I am starting to see another scenario though

Mitt wins FL but Newt remains strong

Rick drops out if he does low in FL...hopefully he would...finally

the race continues

that is only option is Mitt wins FL other than “it’s over”

and Sheldon and others and us keep Newt fat with cash

Newt vs. Bambi

Newt would crush Bambi in a debate. The Teleprompter would be a smoking ruin trying to counter truth and a real orator. Newt doesn’t just read and repeat like Obama. I’d love to see Newt follow Obama around and respond to every Obama appearance too.

Santorum within 10 of Romney before Rick crushed him in last nights debate. I wonder how close it would be if Rick had been recognized earlier for his win in Iowa over Mittens.
Interesting Rick does better head to head against Obama in Florida than Newt.

The establishment means to depress and outlast the base.

That will happen if we let it happen.

This is our country and this could well be our last stand.

Too bad it’s a national poll and not Florida. After Florida, the next few states are all likely Mitten’s — Nevada, Maine, Colorado, Michigan. My understanding is that if he sweeps these, there’s no way for us to recover. Which means Newt just has to win in Florida. I guess that explains the Establishment’s scorched-earth policy in Florida.

I wonder what the long-term effects of the Establishment’s reckless policy to destroy Newt is gong to be? I’ve never felt more alienated from the GOP in my life. Ever. To the point where I even wonder whether I could even vote for Romney in the general. (I know, I know....)

I hate to be negative but ...

What the Florida vs. National polls demonstrate is the power of negative advertising, particularly TV ads.

Newt is just naturally ahead until the negative advertising starts and then he falls behind. Unless he can counter with an advertising program to neutralize the crap that Romney is putting out I’m afraid we are going to see the Florida scenario play out in states that Newt should be able to win.

Then don't. I will not vote for Romney, nor will a great many other Freepers. We don't have to eat what the establishment is serving--yet again.

Crap. And no debates, either. On the plus side, mitt can’t blanket the airwaves with negative ads in every state.
