This is really interesting:
An adviser to Mitt Romneys presidential campaign says in a new book that the campaign was not happy to see former Godfathers Pizza CEO Herman Cains campaign rocked by allegations of inappropriate behavior dating back to the 1990s.
We didnt want [opposition research] on him coming out. We wanted him to stay where he is. He keeps Perry down, the anonymous aide said, referencing Texas Gov. Rick Perry.
The comments were reported in the new e-book, The Right Fights Back, which chronicles the 2012 Republican presidential race so far
Even when Cain polled high, Romney never made an effort to attack him, likely because he never saw the former businessman as a real threat. On the other hand, Romney clearly sees Perry as a threat to his campaign, as evidenced by his constant attacks on the Texas governor.
Rick Perry does have all the money, organization, and endorsements that Newt Gingrich lacks. And he has been spending a lot of that money in Iowa running positive ads (in preparation for a huge negative ad campaign reportedly to be focused on Romney and Gingrich). Romney still sees something in Perry that makes him wary of the Texan.

We Do Not Know ..We do not know. But if its not given to us mere humans to know, we are capable of learning. Were a month away from the Iowa caucus. There are three months before 90 percent of the Republicans in the nation begin voting, and even then, further information will be produced and processed as the primaries unfold. The Democrats are stuck with their nomineea failed and unpopular president. Republicans, by contrast, are free to choose. They are in no way required to rush to judgment. And they need not defer to pundits whose station, office, and dignity impel them to claim to know what they do not know.

It all seems so complicated this election.
I wanted Palin but that ship sailed.
I will vote for anyone but Romney or Paul.
Since Cain’s collapse I have taken another look at Newt...he speaks moderate but his voting record is excellent. Perhaps this is a shrewd plan to appeal to the squishy middle?
I’d have moved to Perry if not for his debate performance. But I have been mulling things over the last few days and I’ve come to the conclusion that Zero will never agree to a debate with anyone who has real debate skills. This means a debate with Newt will never happen. Zero would debate Perry though and since Perry’s debate performance expectations are nil all he would have to do to break even is not faint and fall off the stage. Anything better would constitute a win.
I’m not worried about Perry’s immigration record. This country has allowed the immigration mess to occur. If we wanted to avoid all this we should have kept liberals out of office. Now that long term illegals have kids with no ties to Mexico we have a dilemma on our hands. The only way to get rid of them all is to somehow turn them into republican voters...the democrats would have them all shot on sight.
This is a difficult election.
What a refreshingly even-handed, well articulated comment.
Yes, it is. I'm looking at Santorum depending on what ol' Herm does; and I would support Perry before I'd willingly back Newt. It seems like we've been talking about these guys for about three years now.
Can't wait for the first vote to actually be cast.
there are always debates between the Republican and Democrat candidates.. you can bet at least two..
Romney is (to pinch from my candidate’s campaign) scared mittless. He is nervous of his own shadow. Rarely have I seen such an uninspired, spineless, risk-averse, campaign from a so-called front-runner. Good grief. Is THIS what we are going to have to face if he wins the nomination?
I don't think he could get away with refusing the debates.
I have a feeling that if Newt cannot maintain his front-runner status, Perry will get a second look. Newt’s position on immigration neutralizes Perry’s problem. What Perry needs is an above average performance in the debates. At this moment, people’s expectation on his ability to debate is quite low, so if he’s doing quite fine, that’s probably enough for him.
(1) Perry's Endorsements? There's LaRaza, Acorn, the Mexican president, collective military juntas of the Third World, and, of course, Islam and the Aga Khan......all hellbent on getting Perry elected.
(2) Perry's organization? Perry got his big donors (who are salivating over federal grants and contracts) to come to Iowa------b/c Iowans are dying for Texas money men to tell them how to vote---snix.
(3) Perry's overstuffed campaign money chest? Where is this serial loser getting all this money? See 1 and 2.
Team Romney has backstabbed:
Gov. Palin
Sen. Thompson
Gov. Huckabee
Ms. O’Donnell
The Tea Party
Mr. Cain.
Anyone who dares get in the way of the entitled,
but ineligible, Mitt “the Carpetbagging coward” Romney.
We are not going to get a PERFECT candidate. I believe that Perry is better than a just hold your nose vote.
If he were to debate Newt even once, any form of debate, then he is toast. Zero has nowhere near the skills to face Newt and everyone knows it. The only out is to refuse debates, the MSM will give whatever cover is needed.
This is not a debate against someone like McCain, he can handle a bumbler of that sort. This would be a nightmare for him...he is a coward, no way he will face it.
Mitt and Liz sitting in a tree, K-I-S-S-I-N-G!
Do you recall Mitt challenging Newt during an early debate about Newt's individual mandate being the blueprint for the MA health care mandate, which the Obama/Pelosi/Reid Cabal used for their health care bill?
Newt had to agree and then closed his mouth in defeat (not something he does easily).
'Romney Campaign Still Sees Perry as Threat'And I still think there's a Monster in my closet.
I understand the arguments for backing out, Bobalu.
But IMO that is not an “out”. The heat from that would be incredible, especially if it was clear he was backing out because Newt was the opponent. Then the “coward” label would be indelible. There’d be no defense - no where to run, no possible excuse to make.
A lousy performance, - there are always excuses, always a way to CYA (see Perry), however weak. Not so with simply running away.
We can agree to disagree, eh?
EVERYBODY is a threat to RinoRomney.
He may have the RINO$$$—but the electorate doesn’t want him.
Sorta like McNutt last time around.
