You have to take with a pinch of salt the source of the information that Russian warships are in Syrian territorial waters or are positioned in the Mediterranean. The Syrian Government news agency would be all too happy to make out it was true in order to imply that Russia is backing Syria.

The Kuznetsov Battle Group conducts regular deployments lasting a few months every couple of years. The last time it deployed to the Mediterranean was in 2009.
