I recall an observation by a GI in a book that he had written about his WWII journey fighting through Italy, France then on into Germany. He said that as they cleared the Nazi troops out of the German villages (and with the sound of fighting still in the distance) the German civilians were already busy repairing roofs/windows, cleaning streets and etc....while back in Italy and France, they were
still waiting for help to arrive.
Apparently only a handful of GI's survived the trip from Italy into Germany that he describes.

Actually, it’s nearly 100 years later. A unified Europe dominated by Germany has been Germany’s goal since World War I. It’s hard to blame them . . . In the post-1860s era of the “super-state,” it’s really a matter of getting into the game or being left behind.
