Tie down those Ratchet Tie-Down straps!!!

Tie down those Ratchet Tie-Down straps!!!

A friend visited me at my office today. He had a shiny new bed on his 2008 Chevy short bed 4x4 pick up.

A couple weeks ago, he was hauling his son's four wheeler, and had it tied down with four ratchet straps, one at each corner of the bed.

He was running down the highway in Huntingdon county, when the end of the front passenger side tie down must have come lose in the wind. Next thing he knew, "It felt like I ran over a motorcycle!"

The tie down strap worked its way between his truck cab and pick up bed, and got wrapped around the drive shaft. The drive shaft reeled in the ratchet strap like a high speed winch, drawing the bed down rapidly on the rear suspension. It destroyed his rear suspension and his drive shaft, and bent down a deep "V" in the front of his bed, which is currently for sale on Pennswoods at http://classifieds.pennswoods.net/classifieds/viewad.cgi?adindex=1394156:

The tie down ratchet was hooked to a loop in the bed of the truck,  which took the brunt of the pull from the strap, so the four wheeler was not damaged.

But between the new bed, new rear suspension, and new driveshaft, this little tie down strap caused a $7,000 repair job!

Bud went to his insurance agent to file a claim. He says he told the girl, "I was driving down the road, and a UFO came out of no where and hit the bed of my pick up and blew out my rear suspension and driveshaft! Does that sound unbelievable? Well, then let me tell you what really happened. Its even more unbelievable..."

They paid the claim.

Thanks, this was too good not to share. I went to college with the pick up owner and he was in my office this afternoon. I told him he HAD to show me pictures, so he pulled up the classified ad for the bed on the Pennswoods site. Unbelievable.

It’s hard to find ratchet straps that aren’t made in China. If you look at the side frames, the metal is very thin. If you stress them too much the sides can bend when something happens to place additional stress on the strap thus releasing the tension. After that happens, the only thing you can do is hope luck is on your side that day.

If you use a lever to crank one down really tight, you’ll see what I mean. If you’re buying a Chinese ratchet strap go a couple sizes larger than you think you need.

Thanks. This is 1.5 weeks too late. I had a loose tie strap end get caught on a tire and rip a canoe off my Jeep shattering a side view mirror, denting the door, and tearing the tie down off the hood.

That’s a great heads-up and learning story. I have a similar truck. Who’s going to buy that bed?

In this case, it didn’t release. It was the loose end of the strap that got caught in the wind and found its way down between the bed and cab. The fact the ratchet didn’t release is what caused so much damage. The strap itself broke after it caused the damage.

I agree. It would have never happened with an F150. The Ford would have snapped the strap and kept running. I'm surprised the guy with the Chevy did not also have to replace his alternator. Chevy alternators fail for every other reason.

I had brand new 10,000lb test rachet straps blow out the center spindles. I was going up a hill leaving the Pittsburgh area. Everything was ine until I crested. The back 2 sets failed allowing the front two hooks to drop; three people besides me checked them before starting our trip...

So there I was 20 min into my trip, my 1971 Monte Carlo with 454 bored to 496, 2x 650 Holley 4bbl carbs, Weiand high rise intake, NOS, turbo 450 tranny, full roll cage came right off the trailer.....went through 3 lanes of traffic, clipped the rear bumper of a Jeep, hopped a curb into a bank parking lot, and luckily a tree prevented it from launching 200ft off a ravine.

Thank God no one was hurt. Chinese junk cost me several thousand dollars in damage to a car I owned for 35 minutes.

From then on, I only haul with 5/8" steel chain.

Since then I've also flagged down several other motorists when I see their ratchet straps failing (I tend to notice it more).

I wonder how common this kind of damage is due to ratchet straps wrapping around things?

Hubby says real men use CHAIN! ;o) He also says you tie knots in the remaining rachet tie down straps. You NEVER leave them flapping in the wind. We've hauled quite a few things on long flat beds, at various times, including a Terramite front loader, and an articulated bucket lift. Chains kept them right where we put them.

Awesome car, had a friend that had one with a very similar set up in Altoona back in the early 1980s. My heart goes out to you. I'm almost afraid to ask...Insurance cover the damage?

They covered the damage to the unlucky fellow driving his girlfriend’s Jeep.

These types of products are what one should really be using to hold down heavy loads:

http://www.uscargocontrol.com/Flatbed-Trailer-Products/Transport-Chain-Chain-Binders

BTW - I’ve seen a lot of loads go down the road with straps for holding down the load, BUT... they don’t use those weenie little ratchet ends. A trucker will have ratchet strap winders welded onto the trailer frame.

Yep.

Only caveat I’d add is to make sure to use grade 70, US-made chain. Don’t use cheap crap Chinese chain.

Exactly. Do a series of half hitches and knots until you only have a couple of inches of strap left. Another thing that helps is to twist any extended straps - say from a canoe/kayak to a bumper. Keeps them from “singing” and also from fraying.
