Politico wont say if a rival campaign fed them the story about sexual harassment allegations made against current Republican presidential front-runner Herman Cain in the 1990s.
CNNs Wolf Blitzer on Monday pressed reporter Ken Vogel of Politico on whether the publication relied on opposition research from one of Cains rivals.
Politics are politics as you said, and certainly there are people that are digging up opposition research, Vogel said. Im just not going to do anything that would identify that would point to the identity of our original source.
We dont think that the original source is as important as the actual information, Vogel said.
The reporter said Politico got a tip and it was from someone outside. We managed to corroborate all the details and more. We have to be clear here that this tip was sort of a general tip.

Perry would have the most to gain from a Cain collapse... followed by Bachmann. Mitt isn’t stupid enough to try it and he would have little to gain.
"...two female employees complained to colleagues and senior association officials about inappropriate behavior by Cain, ultimately leaving their jobs at the trade group,"
I lived through the growth period of the sexual harassment industry in the 90's. I know how many women tried to jump on the gravy train of accusing a senior that they did not like. I also know that many of them were paid some sort of settlement that their company felt was cheaper than suffering through an extended legal battle that included them going away forever.
I would venture that the allegations brought were false and the women were gold diggers who took some cash and ran.
I’ve thought that this information was to prevent Cain from getting the nomination... not the POTUS. Now... maybe I am wrong but I am more interested in who/what candidate released the information than I am the nitty-gritty details of Cain’s harassment suit. If Cain is able to successfully answer most of the critics concerning this case... it could very well back-fire on the other candidate who let the cat out of the bag (?!) just a thought.
If this is the sort of crap Perry or Romney (or any of them) is going to use. They’ve already LOST my vote.
You are spreading your opinion as fact.
Newt is too establishment and the establishment appears to actually be defending Cain today. I don’t think Newt or Mitt or Rove is behind it. It was either Perry, Bachmann, or the democrats.
These accusations mean nothing to those of us who remember what happened to Palin.
Been there!
To finish my poorly worded post; I would add that if both women are white my assumption would be that their allegations were racially motivated ( again, remembering the atmosphere of the 90’s).
%Geraldo should pull his gestapo drill session on Politico like he did the Cain campaign last night. It was shameful! I so not like Geraldeo!
The Jonathan Martin, POLLUTICO link more than suggests
Romney again.
What a vicious SOB he is.
His ancestors probably burnt witches at the stake,
and probably were behind the Meadow Mountain Massacre.
You might want to change your tagline!
I’ll take that bet...cuz I’m thinking the same thing...
“Excellent analysis.
If this was a year from now, it could be an issue.
Right now I dont think so.”
Thanks. It’s important to learn from history. Republicans voted 41-2 in favor of Clarence Thomas. The two against him were hard-core RINOs. The goal of Anita Hill was to provide Democrats cover to go against Thomas...I’m sure they knew that the Republicans were going to support him, very strongly, regardless of what they threw at him. In the end, 11 Dems still voted for Thomas, and that got him over the 50 vote mark (i.e., the Dems owned the Senate back then). So the tactic nearly worked...but it relied on Dems to flip.
In this case, there are no Dems to speak of that are part of our nominating process - so now they must try to pry Republicans off of Cain. And that will not be easy, as they made a BIG MISTAKE by ignoring him until he was leading in just about every poll - thereby giving him time to solidify his base and it also gave Republicans more time to think harder about what Perry meant when he said ‘heartless’...and we concluded that he meant just what he said, especially since he’s had a decade to come up with a position on illegal immigration.
So, I do expect this to affect Cain’s numbers at all, despite the wet dreams of the Perry people.
Or his #1 minion...
Princess Leia sees Mitt Romney: "Governor Romney! I should have expected to find you holding Rove's leash..."
Case for Perry - flailing spasms of an agonal campaign
Case for Romney - flailing spasms of a desperate campaign
I don't read ya.
It could just as easily be Obama’s people. I think they are much more worried about Cain than Romney.
I’ve interviewed hundreds of people for professional positions in my career. I feel like I’ve become expert at reading and evaluating body language.
Cain gives me a solid vibe. I think he’s a stand-up guy.
This little episode has Myths finger-prints all over it.
Perry is DEAD unless he kills Cain. His ONLY hope is to get Cain to drop, and re-surge as the pretzel for the gas jets, or whatever. (”I wrote that”).
This feels more like the death-throes of the dying than the calculated effort of a solid co-front-runner.
I’m starting to think that conservative should have a pre-Primary, and run their guy or gal against the GOP RINO candidate, to gain the GOP nomination.
