Pinging the Agenda 21 list.
This article is regarding the smart meters and the manipulations of us through our technologies. Beginning at post 8 there is a lively discussion of the capabilities of the “smart” technologies.
Please let me know by FReepmail if you want on or off the list!
“so pay your bill”
How about - don’t use your AC during peak hours, or we’ll cut you off,
or, don’t use your electric heaters during peak hours, or we’ll cut you off,
or we’re using totally “green energy” so we can’t possibly meet the demand of all our customers, so SOME of you will have to do without for a while. Off.
Thanks for the ping!
I refused to let them put it on my house.
I have to pay a $40 fine this month for refusing - and $12 a month fine hereafter.
But my brain won't get fried - and they can't monitor my usage and what appliances - right down to the make = appliances I use (there's a buried 'gidgit' that picks up the electric signature that can be traced to separate appliances and electric gadgets, like hair driers, curlers, what brand toaster, how long you run anything - on and on.
It they were truly only interested in saving energy, they could tell who was using excess and who was conserving merely by looking at a person's bottom line: their electric bill.] I isn't about conserving energy.
It's about control. Complete and utter control.
We got our notice yesterday that these things will be installed “soon”.
It angers me that CenterPoint Energy makes it sound like a wonderful thing.
It angers me that the new meter will carry an FCC stamp. What does the FCC have to do with our electricity if not to, at some point, transmit personal information?
It scares me that I don’t understand the pros (if any) or the cons of this installation.
It angers me that this is part of the Stimulus package.
It angers me that these things are made by General Electric, which lives in this crooked administration’s back pocket.
I’m confused because I don’t know if we have any real options regarding its installation. This “ implied consent” thing seems like new-speak for “we don’t care about your concerns”.
Most of all, it angers me that we are losing personal freedoms to Big Brother, who is only interested in power and control.
I ‘m not a negative person, but this one makes me feel defeated.
I’ve written CenterPoint telling them they do not have my consent, implied or otherwise. Is my only option now to sit back and just watch them install the thing?
(questions not directed specifically to you, jmaroneps37 - it’s more that I’m ranting at the world in general)
I have a smart meter and I love it. Every monday I get an amail with graph showing how much energy I use on a daily basis and the time. I can better manage my power usage by taking notes through the week and comparing with the graph when I get a surge in usage. If I get a spike in usage, I can look at my notes and determine what activity caused that spike. I can better manage my activities to help control my power bill.
Sure they can. The data being obtained can even tell what type of appliance one is using, when and the duration etc.
This data can also be used/hacked, to determine when one is not home and the patterns or times the home is unoccupied etc., etc.
I am going to let them install one but am also going to install a fairly sophisticated waveform filter on both breaker panels — will put the kibosh on the “electric signatures” thing.
Absolutely!
This is why IBM wants to build a “smarter” planet. It’s all connected.
Tell me how.
You cannot back individual consumption by appliances out of aggregate consumption.
Look, I design these meters for a living.
Sigh.
The FCC governs standards in wireless communications. It's part of the Constitution's direction that the federal government establish weights and measures.
This is NOT a bad thing.
Before I go on, you deny this too?
This data can also be used/hacked, to determine when one is not home and the patterns or times the home is unoccupied etc., etc.
I’ve calmed down a little since making that comment.
However...
I understand the FCC governs standards in wireless communications. I understand the governing of weights and measures. I do not understand how the FCC governing standards in wireless communications and weights and measures gives it the authority to insert itself between my electricity use and my electricity provider.
How is it NOT a bad thing?
Sigh.
