Today, the Susan B. Anthony list and National Organization for marriage released a joint scorecard for the Republican candidates for President at the annual Values Voters Summit. Ordinarily, a release like this carries few surprises, and in this election cycle so dominated by fiscal issues, a scorecard devoted to gay marriage and abortion is unlikely to carry the same weight it would have in the past. However, what may surprise those perusing the score card this time around is the fact that one candidate – the one widely interpreted as the most conservative in the race – actually falls to the Left of most of his peers on both issues.
That candidate is Herman Cain. According to the scorecard, Cain, who many have interpreted as a Huckabee-style populist outsider, looks more like Ross Perot when social issues are discussed. On abortion, Cain is one of only two candidates who have refused to sign the Susan B. Anthony’s pro-Life pledge, a pledge which asks candidates to “commit to key pro-Life goals if elected to the Presidency in 2012.” The other candidate who has refused to sign is (unsurprisingly) former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, whose record on abortion is famously confused. However, Cain still ends up to the Right of Romney in the aggregate on the issue, given that Romney is the only candidate to refuse to make it a priority to appoint pro-Life appointees to Executive Branch offices if elected.
It is on gay marriage where Cain takes more liberties. In fact, on gay marriage, he appears indistinguishable from Libertarian Rep. Ron Paul. Cain has refused to sign the Pro-Marriage Pledge, refused to support the so-called Federal Marriage Amendment, and has “Unknown stances” on every other issue the National Organization for Marriage (NOM) scores, other than defense of the Defense of Marriage Act, which every GOP candidate is on record supporting. In contrast, candidates like Michele Bachmann, Rick Perry and even Mitt Romney have openly said “Yes” to every question asked by NOM.
Given that Cain is perceived as the conservative standard bearer who has eclipsed more socially conventional candidates like Rick Perry, this raises an important question: Is Cain actually conservative enough for his support base, or are social issues actually in their twilight years?
Maybe Cain doesn’t sign them because all you have to do is look at his past to know where he stands.

You forgot, in listing Perry’s conservative credentials, that he shot a coyote. Don’t laugh. I know supposed conservatives who jumped on the Perry bandwagon primarily for that reason.
I live in GA. I have listened to Cain’s radio show, which is more than Frum ever did. Anybody who doesn’t know how socially conservative Cain is hasn’t spent five minutes actually listening to him. He is a great conservative, and smearing him doesn’t help anybody else’s cause, period.
Kind of curious how a poster so concerned with “Social Conservative” issues justifies knowingly lying about the other candidates in a vain attempt to prop up her choice of Perry?

Signing those pledges is dumb. There is no need for it. We know where Cain stands on issues and if you don’t, look it up. He isn’t hiding anything.

That is a commandment, not a suggestion.
No kidding - Cain spends $1 million of his own money to get blacks to vote pro-life but according to these folks, he is not pro-life because he refused to sign a poorly-worded pledge.

Cain says to lower income taxes to 9 percent. Then also have the other two “9s”
Sounds good, but wary voters have noted that it leaves the income tax and the IRS in place and these levels could be adjusted upward.
There are also technical problems with people being helped and others being hurt by the plan as Cain proposed it. States that have sales taxes already, and people that don’t now pay any income tax. Suppose you don’t pay income tax and you already pay a state sales tax. Oops, right off the top you start paying a 9 percent income tax and a 9 percent federal sales tax.
On the flip side, I read where the plan could include rebates to low income people against their state sales taxes...literally, a check in their mail box. But if you made just slightly over the rebate line, wow, you’re just out of luck. Your taxes jump, much less do you get a check in the mail.
I’m not schooled in Cain’s plan, but these are things I’ve read on this site.
I was watching Fox and Friends this morning and Romney was on. Gretchen asked him to criticize Herman Cain, since he is his strongest competition. Romney refused to do so, said he respected Cain and thought he was fine man, and said he preferred to concentrate on his own plan.
I guess it's just me, but I think we would do well not to tear any of our candidates apart..we don't know what is going to happen in the next 13 months.

Make sure you read the rest of the thread. Cain has explained that his reason for not signing the pro-life pledge was because it is the job of CONGRESS to forward the legislation. He has said if the bill was passed by Congress he would sign it as President. And he’s said he would appoint pro-life judges, and a lot of other things that directly refute what this article is claiming about Cain.
Reading Cain’s statements in the links given by other posters in this thread shows that this article is blatantly misrepresenting Cain’s stance on these issues.
I haven’t looked closely enough at both Perry and Cain to know who I support; I was hoping that Sarah would run, to be honest. So I’m not saying this because I belong to either camp, but just because the misrepresentation seems very blatant.
I know that the Frum people are RINO’s, and this report is from them. Probably wanting to get rid of Cain because they know Romney can beat Perry in the debates. So the end goal of this report is to get people like you or me to call Cain a RINO, support Perry, and end up with a real RINO as GOP candidate.
I’m becoming more convinced that Cain is pimping for Romney.
I am not sure about the Fetal-Pain bill. I would like to know more about Mr. Cain’s reasoning here. I would also like an explanation of his policy regarding the appointment of judges. I do know that he supports traditional marriage.
