Carefree
Noman Says ^ | 9/18/11 | Noman

Fred and Ginger! What a pair. Nofamily enjoyed "Carefree" (1938) last night, a typically silly story featuring the stiffest Ralph Bellamy performance ever. Who cares? Don't watch for plot.

The couple danced a dream sequence filmed in slow motion that captures magic. He's dramatic. She's magnificent. They're explosive, yet perfectly in synch. Tell Noman whether their kiss at the end doesn't convince you?

Fred did a solo with golf clubs that gets off to a slow start, picks up steam and finishes strong. Who else besides Fred Astaire could pull this off?

I would rather watch the old classic movies instead of the garbage that is coming out of Hollywood today!

Me too! I saw a movie on TCM one afternoon that had me in stitches. It was called, “Merrily we live”. I had to order it on DVD so Hubby could see it and he’s become a fan of the old movies ever since he watched it. If you’re looking for a funny, silly movie, I recommend this one!

While I do appreciate Astaire's amazingly graceful abilities, I am much more a fan of Gene Kelly's athletic style of hoofing.

Astaire shows he can also do that more physical style with this very nice golfing bit from CareFree as Fred shows off to a disinterested Ginger:

My wife and I have been making our way through the entire Astaire/Rogers movies after I ordered the DVD boxset of their films. Carefree happens to be next on our list. However, the previous film, Shall We Dance, was pretty dreary. The Gershwins did not contribute many songs, and there was not enough dancing.

Fred & Ginger—lifelong conservative Republicans. You can look it up!

Gene Kelly always seemed to be performing for a mirror. He was incredibly athletic, and gifted. But, can you see him doing the golf-club dance, or the one in Royal Wedding where Astaire dances on walls and ceilings?

There is his mop dance from Thousands Cheer:

Mop Dance

The quality of the video is terrible, but you get the idea in the first 30 seconds. Besides, had it been Gene Kelly doing the golf dance, maybe Ginger would have stayed around till the end - [grin].

I understand your point, though. Kelly was a huge show off and had a massive ego. I am a still a sucker for most of his dancing. Thanks for the ceiling reference - I have not seen that bit in ages.
