Conservative commentator George Will did double duty today, first defending the Constitution from those who believe the document was intended to be interpreted flexibly, and then later on This Week, also delivering a message much less likely to be cheered in some conservative circles. Will argued that it is impossible for the deportation of all illegal immigrants in the country to ever be considered a realistic solution.
Will believed that if the borders are secured, then and only then, could a non-politicized discussion take place about what to do with the illegal immigrants currently in America. If there are 11 million illegal immigrants in the country, Will explained why its impossible to think rounding them up could ever be possible:
To deport them would require not just police measures we would never tolerate. The majority have been here five years or more, theyve had children here, their children are citizens. But to depart them would require a line of buses bumper-to-bumper extending from San Diego to Alaska. Not going to happen. And as soon as people come to terms with that, then we get on to settling it.
Given that a secure border is not a weird aspiration, Will argues Americans are not xenophobic and merely just want security. Unfortunately, such a common sense, middle of the road approach probably seems out of reach given how highly politicized the immigration debate always gets.

Not with that attitude.
Another democrat apologist tries to make the argument for a legalized democrat illegal voting blok.
Prosecute any who would hire them without a green card.
You don’t have to deport even one of them. Just enforce the federal laws already on the books and they’ll leave on their own accord. Even pay their own way. Better yet, to keep Mexico from complaining, institute Mexico’s illegal alien laws.
It seems we could make them not really like to be here anymore, if we enforce laws against hiring illegals.
Certainly we can use some of the same methods.
As I've demonstrated numerous times there is sufficient excess capacity in our existing airlines to haul 'em all back to Southern Mexico within 6 months.
BTW, meeting them at the airports for deportation beats the heck out of buses, but we could it with buses as well, or just have them drive themselves out of here.
Will only imagines it will take police state methods. You give the United States a couple of dozen whopping big winters (coming up soon) and they'll be out of here so fast you won't believe it.
So will George Will!
Stop giving them jobs and free government checks and they'll go home of their own volition.
It's happened everywhere it's been tried.
You know what happened when our own US national soccer team was BOOD’ on their own home soil?
Yes, that’s what happened with this open-border policies. Just place landmines on the damn border already.
And cut off all public assistance and aid, except emergency medical treatment.
And Georgie boy, I guess because we'll never catch "all" murderers, rapists, and muggers we should just give up on that, too. Right Georgie boy?
Gotta cut them and their kids off from welfare to. Or they will stop working, but won’t leave.
They are already filling ER rooms for a cough.
People are already tolerating the new tyrannical order, from the overthrow of the 4th Amendment to the jackbooted efforts of most of the alphabet agencies. Police measures are OK for the innocent citizens but not for the alien criminals?
i think he likes the cubs
Kill the incentive, and many will self-deport. As to other countries who criticize our policies, I have one simple comment.
How many do you want?
So we can track every single cow, pig, sheep, and chicken in the country but we cannot deport illegals.
Fine, cut the benefits and don’t let them work. They’ll self deport.
Its cheaper to encourage them to leave on their own.
Okay let us say the border is secured.
If we cannot deport them, then lets not do anything FOR them either.
Make it illegal for a foriegner to get any type of public assistance for one thing, make it illegal for a foreigner to get preferential treatment by cities, police, courts, colleges etc
How is that for a compromise??
Shameful attempt to knock down a straw man. Will disappoints more and more frequently in his twilight years. No serious observer has suggested "the deportation of all illegal immigrants." Only an idiot--or a panderer like Will-- would imagine rounding up eleven or twelve million people.
We live with criminals every day and that will not change. But much can be done, including establishing conditions which will motivate illegals to self-deport. And we don't need to encorage them by giving them in-state college tuition for example, or free medical care.
Furthermore, pursuing drug cartel cutthroats and people traffickers is no more than diligent local law enforcement. Whatever Will has against that I cannot tell.
At least build a real fence - not some BS virtual fence, but a real fence extending along every inch of the border from the Pacific to the Gulf of Mexico, and staff it with armed border guards every few hundred feet. Stop treating border security and national sovereignty like a joke and have some respect for the wishes of Americans.
