Lawmakers to introduce bill to legalize marijuana

A group of US representatives plan to introduce legislation that will legalize marijuana and allow states to legislate its use, pro-marijuana groups said Wednesday.

The legislation would limit the federal government's role in marijuana enforcement to cross-border or inter-state smuggling, and allow people to legally grow, use or sell marijuana in states where it is legal.

The bill, which is expected to be introduced on Thursday by Republican Representative Ron Paul and Democratic Representative Barney Frank, would be the first ever legislation designed to end the federal ban on marijuana.

“This is creeping up on them fast. Still, they have a visceral understanding of some capitalist fundamentals ~ one of them is when times get tough the toughs get tougher and dispose of their competitors. At the same time they still have to maintain a retail network.”

Again, this is an intriguing theory but it has no basis in fact. It would make a good mystery novel however.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/02/03/marijuana-use-down-among-_n_163516.html ~ even far Leftwingtard pot heads say use is down. Unfortunately this is based on surveys so who really knows. Kids lie about it.

OK, you’re not even trying.

“...a study of 15-year-olds in 30 countries found...”

Not 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23 and 24 year olds, but just 15 year olds. And it’s not because of any of the reasons you previously claimed. They think (if it’s true at all) that 15 year old kids are not going outside to be with other 15 year old kids due to cells and smartphones.

You can’t claim that all drug use is down due to the recession when you have a dubious survey narrowly aimed at 15 year olds whose authors came to a completely different conclusion. Come on. You can do better than that, can’t you?

Your suggestion that likker sales always increase in a recession appears to be untrue ~ with some really bad recessions. We don't know how much likker sales dropped in the early 1930s because, alas, no one reported production and sales!

This one ~ we have records and sales dropped.

You can do the searching yourself ~ try Marijuana Sales Down and Alcohol Sales Down. Or, Marijuana Sales Up and Alcohol Sales Up.

You can get probing reports on both sets of conditions ~

“BEER crashed in 2009”

Stop, stop, stop. This is too funny. You have to actually read your articles.

“Distilled spirits grew 1.7% in 2009...”

“The US wine market grew for the second consecutive year...Wine consumption increased 0.8%...”

“Total beer consumption declined 1.4% in 2009...”

Beer down 1.4, hard stuff up 1.7, wine up .8. That’s an increase in overall alcohol consumption of 1.1 percent.

Your facts have been anything but accurate so far. You may need to bring your computer in for repair because your Google isn’t working properly. :-)

You can find anything you want on the net. Alcoholic beverage sales around the world SLUMPED in this worldwide Great Obama Recession.

As a point of order MOBs existed in Chicago BEFORE Prohibition. That became an issue only when Capone started rubbing out competitors.

You should pay attention to what you are reading. This is a beer drinking country. Outside of a few million people on the Left Coast and the Northeast, wine is simply not a big deal.

A 10% drop in beer sales, for example, would EXCEED the total volume of wine sold in this country.

And yet you sent me figures that prove exactly the opposite. Why?

2009 saw French wine sales soften globally so they dropped the price like crazy. The local Total Wine & Beverage Outlet (modeled after the large wine emporiums in Paris and other large French cities) in our neighborhood began selling leading estates with a "t" besides the price meaning this was One Cent over the wholesale price originally negotiated.

The retailer was, of course, getting a direct kickback from Fench growers/wholesalers so he wasn't out of pocket on the deal.

Picked up some great stuff.

I couldn't have done that In Louisville, New Orleans, Terre haute, Vincinnes, St. Louis, Des Moines ~ for example. They drink a lot of beer there.

The relevant part pertained to the United States, but even the French government complained that wine sales were really down and they were very upset about that.

Now you’re just making crap up. You sent figures from the Beverage Information Group that showed a 1.1 percent increase in alcohol consumption in 2009. You can’t have an increase in overall alcohol sales and then claim that you have some magical beer figure that negates actual sales figures. You don’t work for the IPCC do you?

Sure. New Orleans don’t know nothin’ ‘bout wine and hard liquor. Right. Seriously, thank you. I haven’t had this much fun on FR in years. Please, keep ‘em comin’.

I don’t know what this link is but I went back to your figures and beer sales were down 2.9 billion cases while hard liquor was up 188.7 million cases. But cases of scotch vs cases of beer? I think we may have a wash.

By count that’s a 20 to 1 ratio, so by volume it’s undoubtedly the case that beer leads the way to the bottom.

No, but again, an early side effect of intoxication is impaired judgment. People who are unsophisticated when sober turn into morons when intoxicated. We've been over this, and yet you won't let it go. Perhaps something is effecting your own judgment?

A side effect of old age is impaired judgment. Should we ban old people, too?

You've led a charmed life. I've never met this guy, but he is the biggest "a$$hole" I can think of on this rainy day in NY.

Not really. I've had my share of hard knocks. But, I still try to keep a positive outlook on life.

This is called turnabout. Obviously I don't think ALL people who use drugs are like David Laffer, but when you suggest that Conservatives with society's best interests in mind are all "a$$holes who think they are morally superior," I have to bring the conversation back to something approaching reality. Ron and Nancy Reagan were HUGE "a$$holes" by your terms.

I never said all. Not all conservatives want to control every aspect of everyone else's life. I guess the term, "self-determination" is meaningless to you.

As they say, the road to hell is paved with good intentions.

While Reagan did some good, he didn't walk on water. Sure, he cut taxes, but he also made a deal with the liberals on Congress to let them spend money like drunken sailors.

He also allowed law enforcement to trample on due-process by signing asset forfeiture bills into law.

Personally it would not bother me one bit if alcohol was illegal along with all the other mind altering drugs, so you're barking up the wrong tree with that one.

Does it bother when your heroes, the drug warriors, bust down the door of the wrong house and shoot someone's grandmother?

Jesus never got drunk, as far as we know. Again, there is a fundamental difference between alcohol and all illegal drugs: Throughout human history non-alcoholics have been able to enjoy alcohol socially and in moderation without getting drunk (and without the intention of getting drunk), while the only reason to smoke pot is to get stoned.

If Jesus had lived during prohibition, you would have had him arrested for distribution of alcohol.

Getting stoned is not the only reason to smoke pot, which is why many states have passed medical marijuana laws.

“undoubtedly”

So far that term can’t be applied to anything we’ve discussed. :-)

And just to throw another wrench into your figures, home brewing is becoming more and more popular. Plus there is an entire underground of hard liquor production (which is illegal in most states).
