I thought the people who accept Food Stamps were supposed to prevent this kind of stuff from happening. After all, who buys six cases of Mountain Dew to wash down lobster and porterhouse steaks?

There is an actual storefront in Knoxville (not legal of course) that when you take in your Food Stamp card you can exchange it for drugs.
You could crank the eligible commodities available down to the basics: flour, milk powder, rice, salt, sugar, fresh fruits and vegetables, fresh and frozen meats, basic canned goods. That would be discriminatory to those living in "food deserts".

30 years ago in college a fellow classmate had food stamps and would eat peanuts and burritos during the week. On weekends he’d eat T-bones.
It’s my understanding that this guy was arrested for Food Stamp fraud. He bought the expensive food on the card, then sold it half-price for cash.

I'll grant that's likely not the case....they're getting more money from *somewhere*. But I thought that the attitude, in theory at least, was correct.
I wonder if EBT card purchases are auditable? For instance, in this particular case, if a user blows their whole allotment on one meal, that would be a red flag, to me at least, that they have other sources of income and could get disqualified for future compensation.

Last thread about this very subject I got accused of thinking that “being poor was a crime” because I though that food stamps should only be able to buy pre-packaged boxes of the basic foodstuffs that are a step below cafeteria food like generic and canned food.
What they also need is random drug testing for any and all “gubermint benefits”. You fail the drug test you get you “bennies” pulled so fast that you think you are living in the Great Depression Era and have to rely on charities.
Being Poor is not a crime, My parents grew up poor, but they had pride and gumption, take a look at the “American poor” these days and most live better than the struggling lower middle class who don’t take anything from the government. Government assistance shouldn’t be the “lottery” is should be a something that only provides the bare necessities of life for those who are grateful to receive them.
Red Flags, Audit. Surely you jest. This is the same government that paid out 72 million dollars in social security checks to dead people. AUDIT HAHAHAHAHAHAHA
