Living on the harsh, wind-swept northern Great Plains, North Dakotans lean towards the practical in economic development. Finding themselves sitting on prodigious pools of oil—estimated by the state's Department of Mineral Resources at least 4.3 billion barrels—they are out drilling like mad. And the state is booming.
Unemployment is 3.8%, and according to a Gallup survey last month, North Dakota has the best job market in the country. Its economy "sticks out like a diamond in a bowl of cherry pits," says Ron Wirtz, editor of the Minneapolis Fed's newspaper, fedgazette. The state's population, slightly more than 672,000, is up nearly 5% since 2000.

Actually, it is really cold for 3 to 4 months.. Springs and Falls are usally okay and summers are tremendous.
I love North Dakota because of the people who live there. You may want to take a week and visit Fargo, Bismarck and perhaps even Dickinson. The jobs will come to you if you pay attention.
No it is oil.. Just to give you an idea of the thinking in ND, the state legislature just voted to cut higher education even though they have surpluses.. It pissed alot of people off, but that is their mentality...
Well, I live in North Carolina, so “really cold” by your measure probably feels like Antarctica to me.
I will freely admit that I am a wimp about cold weather. It’s why I have vowed I will never live up North again if I can help it. I moved back to my home state of NC after a sojourn to New England years ago and have never looked back!
And let’s see...how many black and Mexican gangs are there in North Dakota? How many welfare families? How many leftist politicians making certain kids remain dumbed-down and perpetually dependent upon Big Brother? Ya think this might have anything to do with the success of the state??

The temp extremes keep out the riffraff. You don’t see too many Somalis or other foreigners trying to move there do you?
North Dakota deals with the native Americans. They tend to be more self destructive.
If you can work and can pass a drug test you can get a close to six figure job in the oil fields in western ND. The only problem is finding housing.
Are there jobs for women there?
I remember back in the early 80’s the newspapers were saying there were lots of jobs in Tuscon, AZ. I went there and there were NO jobs.
Please tell me the real deal about ND.
I was stationed at Grand Forks for about eight years.
The temps dip below 0 degrees in December and usually don't go above until the middle of February. It is common to have a few weeks of -30 degree temps and one time we had -40 and below. Brutal but you can manage if you keep a positive attitude and get out to do things.
Just go shopping and out to dinner a couple of times per week so you do not get "cabin fever."
The summers are really nice but short. The local swimming pools open the first week of June and close the last week of August; along with the Garden Centers.
Those are "products" that Texas needs to start exporting now! Any liberal states want our Messkins and Holder's "people"?
Nobody wants to mention ND’s homogeneous population as a reason for their success. Let’s just say when there’s no illegals and no inner-city thugs you’re bound to be successful.
Hmmm. I’ve never been there but the Yunker side of my family is from ND. Used to have a big farm up there somewhere, now it’s a children’s museum. Maybe I need to get back in touch with my roots. Illinois is sure going down the tubes.
I live in Alaska, I can only work from april til november.
Starting this late fall I am taking on a seasonal job in Australia. 19 years of Alaska winters is getting old, and Oz welcomes skilled workers, and since I’m approaching retirement age they have a better economy for that.
The future in America I would bet is a lovely classical in an Imax theater and then off to the soylent grinders.
