It has been a real eye opener for me as well.

I remember while growing up, my mother's gentle responses to crude insults thrown at her because she was a Mississippian. That of course was in the 50's and 60's. I had hoped most had abandoned the southern stereotypes.

Guess not and that is just really sad.

Why can’t the Republicans change the definition of a quorum in the Wisconsin Senate?

The quorum requirement is in the state constitution. I'm not sure what the procedure is to change the constitution. It might involve a ballot initiative.

If they don't come back in a timely manner, then no budget gets passed, and the state doesn't get to send out checks.

If Wisconsin is like many states, the state subsidizes the schools and local governments. No state subsidy check means the schools don't have enough money to operate at their current level, and would have to lay off people.

I would be tempted to just let it happen. Let the state shut down, and state employees not get paid. Have no state pension checks be mailed. The pain would mainly be borne by Democrat constituencies.
