12 Things You Need to Know About the Uprising in Wisconsin

AlterNet is the alter universe. A simple web search puts the lie to everything in that article.

Report on Wisconsin’s budget deficit contains hidden costs $2.2 billion deficit balloons to $3.3 billion without assumed spending cuts

From November, 2010

I realize you are using that link to illustrate the lies of the left.

THIS should be on billboards and signs everywhere throughout Milwaukee.

Tells you what they think about the product they put out.

Indeed it does - The Governor needs this message to become HUGE.

Well, I’m a teacher and if I had kids, I’d send them to private school too, but not because of my fellow teachers. I’d do it because of the kids they’d have to interact with here at the public schools.

article...have come out about average teacher salaries in WI being in the $100K range...

My wife is a retired school teacher with over 40 years experience and I can say with certainty there is no truth to that assertion. Average salaries were perhaps half of that ($50,000 per annum). Top of the salary scale may have approached $100K (she has been retired for three years and we don't stay in touch), but "top of the chart" is a PhD with 35 years experience and there are very few of those in any given district. They tend to be Psychologists specializing in "Special Education".

GtG

I’m sure that the figures quoted include the price tag for benefits. That is the way salaries are always quoted.

For instance, in the Mequon-Thiensville District, take home pay is in the $50,000-$60,000 range, but when you include benefits (health, retirement, etc) the average salary comes out to be around $92,000. The benefits for each teacher are around $30,000/yr. I’ve read the average gross of $100,000 for Milwaukee teachers many places.

Of course, we are talking about AVERAGES which includes everyone from beginning teachers through administration. When lay offs occur, the beginning teachers go first which further skews the average because the higher paid remain in the pool.

have you seen the Milwaukee Public Schools buildings and grounds, they have become rather rundown and look like dumps. hey when I went to a Milwaukee Public School till 1982 the schools were not the best than. There was only one high school in the MPS system that had open lunch - Milwaukee Trade and Technical High School, this is where I attended.

Milwaukee Trade and Technical is no more it is Bradley Tech and has moved to the Menomonee River Valley (former home to Milwaukee railraod (bought out years ago, by CN Railraod, new building.) But last year there were problems at Bradley Tech and the school has basically lost some of its prestige.

MPS schools are one of the worst in the nation for High School dropout and Math and reading tests scores are some of the worst. What has happened in MPS and Wisconsin’s other schools - many of the teachers are just more interested in the money and give a damn about students (Notice I did not say all, just many of the teachers do not care).

A contractual condition requiring teachers and administrators to send their children to public school would have a salutory affect on the quality of public education.

I remember reading back in the 1990’s when I was investigating homeschooling, that this was true. Hasn’t changed in 30 years, I see.

In general across this nation, the educrats send MORE of THEIR kids to private schools, than the average joe.

I am not surprised.

Want to hurt those union thugs?

Homeschool your kids. Here is a resource to find out what your state law for homeschooling is.

My kids went to the Milwaukee public schools @ 10 years ago.

1/3 of the schools were excellent.

1/3 of the schools were good.

1/3 of the schools were holding pens for the FFA (Future Felons of America).

One of the biggest reasons why this teacher’s family homeschools.

For a lot less money, we could just close all public schools.

If you think about it, Wisconsin is in the shape it is because the voters, most of whom are products of the government schools, repeatedly elected people who made bad decisions. These public school teachers have a large stake in creating this mess. Of course they’re going to want their children to get a better education than the “average” child in Wisconsin.

"Go Figure: 29.4% of Milwaukee Public School Teachers Send Their Kids to Private Schools"

Actually, I think this is an unremarkable statistic. It would mean something if 90% was the number, but not 29%.

Why? Because even amongst the teachers union, I expect that 29% are conservatives, if not Republicans. They are just closet conservatives because they don't want to be harassed or bullied by their colleagues.

Second, I expect that some fraction of these 29% are Catholics, who would send their kids to Catholic schools regardless of the quality of Milwaukee public schools.

Third, I expect that some fraction of these 29% are evangelical Christians, who homeschool their children, and would do so regardless.

Don't forget that many of these teachers, the white ones at least, probably live in in the suburbs; their kids wouldn't attend the inner city Milwaukee schools. Hence, the statistic doesn't apply there, either.
