My wife is a retired school teacher with over 40 years experience and I can say with certainty there is no truth to that assertion. Average salaries were perhaps half of that ($50,000 per annum). Top of the salary scale may have approached $100K (she has been retired for three years and we don't stay in touch), but "top of the chart" is a PhD with 35 years experience and there are very few of those in any given district. They tend to be Psychologists specializing in "Special Education".

I’m sure that the figures quoted include the price tag for benefits. That is the way salaries are always quoted.
For instance, in the Mequon-Thiensville District, take home pay is in the $50,000-$60,000 range, but when you include benefits (health, retirement, etc) the average salary comes out to be around $92,000. The benefits for each teacher are around $30,000/yr. I’ve read the average gross of $100,000 for Milwaukee teachers many places.
Of course, we are talking about AVERAGES which includes everyone from beginning teachers through administration. When lay offs occur, the beginning teachers go first which further skews the average because the higher paid remain in the pool.
