OF the many truths in President Obamas powerful Tucson speech, none was more indisputable than his statement that no one can know what is in a killers mind. So why have we spent so much time debating exactly that?
The answer is classic American denial. It was easier to endlessly parse Jared Lee Loughners lunatic library did he favor The Communist Manifesto or Ayn Rand? than confront the larger and harsher snapshot of our current landscape that emerged after his massacre. A week on, that denial is becoming even more entrenched. As soon as the president left the podium Wednesday night, we started shifting into our familiar spin-dry post-tragedy cycle of the modern era speedy closure, followed by a return to business as usual, followed by national amnesia.
If we learn nothing from this tragedy, we are back where we started. And where we started was with two years of accelerating political violence actual violence, not to be confused with violent language that struck fear into many, not the least of whom was Gabrielle Giffords.
For the sake of this discussion, lets stipulate that Loughner was a lone nutjob who had never listened to Glenn Beck or been a card-carrying member of either the Tea or Communist parties. Lets also face another tragedy: The only two civic reforms that might have actually stopped him tighter gun control and an effective mental health safety net wont materialize even now....

blah blah blah ... So why have we spent so much time debating exactly that?
It's easy to see what's in Frank Rich's mind and THANK GOD!!! I don't have to live with that boring tape loop in my head.
Check out the links in Rich’s column. Quite a few of them are blog posts and NYT articles. One of them is one of Rich old columns, and another is listing of “insurrectionist” incidents compiled by the “Coalition to Stop Gun Violence.”
It was the "mental health safety net".
Bald Headed Dude gave ample warning. "The Authorities" did nothing.
That's not The Gun Owners' Fault. It's theirs.
And by the way, because of drunk drivers, I call for Frank Rich's car to be confiscated.
It will save lives.
LOL! Good deconstruction.
Apr 16, 2007 · Thirty-three people, including the gunman, were killed on the Virginia Tech campus Monday in the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history.
SARAH PALIN WAS THE GOVERNOR OF ALASKA.
EXPLAIN *that* FRANK RICH AND THE REST OF YEW HATEFUL, IDIOT, FLAMING, BLOOD LIBELING LIBTARDS!
>> tighter gun control and an effective mental health safety net
Liberals will complain about the GPF of a household toilet but never complain about the gallons of law so recklessly flushed on the good Citizens of this Country.
New York Times: an old gray rag who’s out of touch with pretty much everything.
Heh, I’d almost rather be a schizo than have one lone gray marble rolling around in my noggin like Frank. ;-)
So much for kumbaya
Mr. Rich either has a selective memory or he simply does not care that one of the people in his list was a Lefty who had simply had enough of tax laws that penalize small businessmen.
In his list is one Joe Stack (not listed by name) who flew his small plane in to an I.R.S. office in Austin, Texas last year.
IRS had simply bled this man dry over a period of years and had driven him to commit murder/suicide.
But his manifesto/suicide note posted on-line clearly show that he was not a right winger and in fact hated capitalism.
If I remember the post at the time it was shown that he voted Democrat.
But of course for the purposes of a opinion piece in the NYT as long as he is anti-IRS he is a Right-Wing violent nut.
How about we conduct an investigation into the Sheriff’s office and reveal what he did or didn’t do regarding the multiple complaints against this loon.
Cheers!
Cheers!
Liberal scapegoat
Liberal Hero
Cheers!
I’m pretty sure that ain’t no cinnamon roll in there. ;^)
This is Rich!
“the vandalism and death threats were the latest consequences of a tide of ugly insurrectionism that had been rising since the final weeks of the 2008 campaign and that had threatened to turn violent from the start.”
Rich knows just by looking at it what is
“ugly insurrectionism” when that beast is
threatening “to turn violent from the start.”
And the lines between the conservative
resurgence and broken campaign HQ windows
is so clear.
We don’t need law enforcement anymore.
We can arrest people based on what
the left says will turn violent,
before an act is even committed.
What about the illegal drug usage?
Loughner is mentally evil just like Frank Rich is mentally evil. Their modus operandi differ but one is supporting the other.

It’s unfortunate that the NY Times is still published.
Is there any point in republishing it here?
