The Coupon Whisperer: FREE Tide!!!
The Coupon Whisperer ^ | January 10, 2011 | PJ-Comix

Posted on 01/10/2011 6:35:33 AM PST by PJ-Comix

I used to get some really incredible deals via couponing on a variety of laundry detergents but my wife wasn't satisfied. She wanted only one brand: Tide. It seems that people from Venezuela have developed VERY strong loyalties to various product brands. For example, she also disdained any toothpaste except for Colgate (or "Col-gah-teh" as she pronounces it) although I have finally gotten her to become a fan of Crest as well. This wasn't a problem because I have been able to score a lot of FREE tubes of both Colgate and Crest via creative couponing. However, Tide had remained a problem.

The Tide coupons seem to always be for just a dollar. The 100 oz Tide is usually $15.99 in the store although sometimes it is discounted down to as low as $9.99 which makes the cost after applying the coupon $8.99. The 50 oz size is normally about $8.99 and when they are discounted down to $5.99 it is still going to cost you 5 bucks after the coupon. So how to get FREE detergent while keeping my wife from griping all the time?

Simple. I discovered travel size products which are numerous and include Tide. Just do what I did last Saturday and go to either Target or Walmart. I went to the travel size bin of Target and, using 10 Tide one dollar coupons, picked up 10 travel size packets of Tide. Each Tide packet has enough detergent for one laundry load. They were selling for 97 cents each so my final cost for them was FREE!!!

And now my wife isn't complaining about a lack of Tide. Now she is griping about how she has to go through the "trouble" of opening a Tide packet every time she wants to wash a load of laundry. You know what? TOUGH!!!

Oh and all the info about the travel size Tide packs and the coupon you need to use is pretty much self-explanatory in the photo above. You will probably find that same coupon again in your local Sunday newspaper on January 16 in the P&G insert.

Happy Tiding!

Then I guess you won’t be going to Target.

Thanks, Helen1 - perhaps I’ll try that one; I’m certain that I don’t want multiple bottles of Maalox, and I don’t have half a dozen coupons anyway, and I’m uninterested in buying coupons.

You’re welcome. I’m trying to learn this stuff.

Still have RRs from the fish oil deal so shouldn’t have any out of pocket (or at least very little.)

First stab at couponing combined at CVS and Walgreens;

$100 spent out of pocket
If I paid retail according to receipts for both places $170
$15 RR @ Walgreens
$20 ExtraBucks @ CVS

Not great but what I got will go a long way. Might not have to get some of what I bought for six months or more.

After a couple of months reading The Coupon Whisperer you should be able to get that same amount of retail for no more than about 20 bucks OOP.

YIKES! I think my wife is checking up on me. I took a look at SiteMeter to find out details about visitors to The Coupon Whisperer blog and one of the visitors came in via Facebook from the Broward Community College library. My wife is a FaceBook friend and guess where is is RIGHT NOW? At Broward Community College taking a class. She might not take too kindly about me posting about her gripes in public. Uh-Oh!

BTW they screwed up @ CVS. I just looked at the receipt and I should have another $10 in ExtraBucks. Or I have to buy one more thing to get it.

I’ve made my own laundry detergent before. It takes some getting used to. It was a pain for me to transfer the contents of the bucket into the smaller container I saved from previous use. I like the idea of saving multiple used detergent bottles so you can do the transferring all at once. That sounds much easier to me. Also, I kind of miss the fresh scent of detergents and would consider adding a bit of fragrance next time.

Thank you for posting the links. It’s been awhile since I’ve done this and think I’ll try again. It lasted for about 5 months with our 5 kids. Not bad!

Update to the CVS ExtraBucks snafu. Some how in trying to earn $10 in EB I came up short $.05. I don't know how I did but I did. I had to buy another 2 litre Pepsi for a dollar. But I got my rewards card yesterday and its not entered into the system yet. The cashier who was a supervisor tried to generate the $10 EB but it wouldn't go through the system because my card isn't on file yet. Her fix was to give me $10 cash instead which was fine by me.

Moral to the story is if you don't have a CVS card yet make sure a week or so to use it after you fill out the form to cut down on the confusion

Not my experience. You will get your EBs LONG before you are in the system. The problem was you were a nickle short. Makes no diffence if your name is in system or not.

true about the nickel which I still can’t figure out how I was short.

All I know is I have enough Pepsi products to rot out eight sets of teeth. Between Super Bowl and a daughter’s birthday party coming up it was worth the investment.

I've decided I'm going to do just about the same thing, but only at Wags.

Reason is, I want to get started, so I decided that if ANYTHING which we use all the time has ANY register rewards, to simply purchase it.

I'll check for coupons, too, of course, but now that I have a general idea what others are doing, it seems the ONLY way to really learn it... is to just JUMP IN... and sink or swim, LOL

So, the first purchase will be HIGH, but I'd have spent it somewhere on the same things, so it's okay - mainly I want to get at least 20 in RRs.

Question: should I try to get a whole bunch of sales receipts, or just pack it all on to ONE??
