Exotic Aircraft Identification Thread
Hidden | 11/30/2010 | Self

Just for fun, how about we stump each other with exotic or unusual airplane photos. Upload to Tinypic so no one can cheat by looking at the image source.

I'll go first. What is this aircraft?

WHO are you? ( and your tagline is familiar - what’s the story with it?)

I once saw a guy in a Beech 18 try this stunt at an airshow, and fail.

That is the Ilya Muromets bomber designed by Igor Sikorsky in the WWI.

Do you even have a life?

I have been an aviation fanatic since I was a wee bairn. :-)

The tagline is an homage to my relatives who served in the USAAC/USAAF in WWII.

Sorry, I meant that my FR name is an homage. My tagline comes from The Blues Brothers.

WHO are you?

An aviation enthusiast. Some of my friends and family would jokingly say that my enthusiasm borders on obsession. :-)

More specifically, I think that is a Lightning F.6.

Yep, not that exotic of Aircraft, but thought it was an interesting picture.... external fuel tanks ON TOP of the wings and what appears to be a large thermonuclear device underneath :)

An English Electric/BAC Lightning. That was an amazing and much-beloved aircraft with one of the highest thrust-to-weight ratios ever to see service.

This is probably the F.6 variant with the overwing drop tanks (which couldn't be dropped until empty), and the larger fuel tank under the fuselage. Most of these had 2 30mm Aden cannons at the forward part of the under-fuselage tank but I don't clearly see them here.

The bulge on the underside is caused by one of the engines. The Lightning was a twin jet with the engines arranged vertically (one stacked atop the other).

Yeah, the cannon prts are not really clear in that photo. The Lightning was a really interesting design. The trainer version was also nifty looking because it was a side-by-side arrangement instead of a tandem seat layout.

You are right.. it looked like something else tucked in there in the previous picture. Odd, but I guess necessary design.

A-HA! I got you on one point!

It was a BAC Lightning, not a BAe. BAe wasn't formed out of BAC and Hawker-Siddely until 1977, and by that time the Lightning was out of production.

But you are right about it being an F.6 model.
