What went wrong with the Whitman campaign?

In the springtime, strategists for Meg Whitman in her campaign for governor of California probably felt they’d died and gone to heaven in. In a state roiled in political in-fighting, effectively bankrupt, and a political atmosphere in which the electorate was sharpening pitchforks and boiling tar, you had a non-political woman, an internet legend, immensely successful, running as a moderate Republican, which all the pundits agree is the only way for Republicans to get elected in California. Meg Whitman, the first female billionaire in fact, with all the private money available one could ever hope to spend. And the opponent? Laughable, really. A former two-term governor who earned the moniker “Governor Moonbeam” for outlandish ideas, who turned the state’s large surplus into large deficit, raised taxes, and left it with a (then) record unemployment rate and a shrinking economy.

What went wrong.

Gloria Allard

Jerry Brown declaring that ALL young people documented or not should have a chance to go to collage. Said CA was a ‘great’ state that can MAKE this happen.

” “I wonder how Whitmans husband and daugters are feeling about the $165 million that mom flushed down the toilet with her stupid campaign.”

I wondered about that myself today. They must have thought “there’s goes my inheritance”. And for what? Kalifornia does not deserve Whitman. “

they can console themselves with the other billion or so she has left to her name. It’s not like they’re gonna be hitting the foodstamp/EBT lines hard anytime soon.

And now she should put some money towards getting that lawyer disbarred for bringing that frivolous politically motivated lawsuit.

Arnie lost his stones after his initiatives on the ballot were defeated a few years back. He just never got back into the game.

There are several types of "rinos". some are like daddy Bush and have no core convictions. Some are wind watching fence sitters like Charlie Crist. Some are wooses that can change their vote based on a schmaltzy news story. Some are libertarians and believe in small government like Ron Paul. Some are socially liberal, but fiscal hawks like Chris Shays, Rudy , and Chris Christie. qIn a blue state a libertarian or a Shays or Christie is the best we can get. but as long as they are fighters I can totally support them.

Brown has the massively corrupt democrat machine. It has nothing to do with hippies and everything to do with ballot fraud and vote buying.

Beg to differ.

Since 2003, when the old hippies rediscovered their misspent youth by protesting the Iraq war, they’ve been wallowing in nostalgia. Jerry’s just the latest “remember when” for these crazy geezers.

No he’s not.

He got elected Attorney General when he wasn’t eligible, and now governor, arguably not eligible because of term limits written into California’s state constitution.

He’s clearly got the labor mafia and unsavory and corrupt ‘activist judges’ who prevent the exercise of the law in his case.

And the republican party endorsed a candidate who never even bothered to vote, let alone care about how the state government is supposed to work, unless she was bribing a politician with a campaign donation.

Appreciate your points, but with respect to those amounts in the table, they are chump change to those contributors, and represent small investments that have more to do with political access than political support. Hedging bets its called.

The point was that Meg Whitman was a liberal that ran on a pro-abortion, anti-gun platform.

Hundreds of millions from unions. All the poor voting Democrat for welfare along with unions voting for their increased pay and benefits.
A few bits of percentage would be outright liberals.

It's true the kids in school are indoctrinated, but the adults are either on welfare or the government employment dole.
