Juan Williams Canned by NPR “National Public Radio” for “Anti-Muslim” Remarks
Republican Redefined ^ | T Christopher

Posted on 10/20/2010 11:28:33 PM PDT by T Christopher

Notice the title of his book here!!!

Perhaps a more accurate title would have read - Juan Williams Canned by NPR "National Public Radio" for "Anti-Muslim" Remarks... ON FOX NEWS

Liberal commentator, Juan Williams, has been terminated by NPR for remarks made on Fox News's The O'Reilly Factor.  The Dem-apologist - who has made great strides in recent years toward a permanent move to the Right  - made comments regarding post-911 travel and was unceremoniously bounced from publicly funded radio.  Tax payer dollars at work right?  Free Speech in action?

You can see the comments at the center of the firing below.

Via BreitbartTV: Via Memeorandum:

In watching the clip, I have to say that it seems rather off-the-cuff and unrehearsed to me - certainly not reflective of some deep-rooted hatred or discriminatory tendencies.  While I wish he could have left out the obligatory - "you know I'm not a bigot but...." disclaimer, Williams was simply sharing a feeling of reservation felt by many every time they board a flight in the post-911 world.  That's not racist; that's not insensitive; that's not even counterintuitive.  Okay, it may technically be the first two, but its certainly not the latter.  While it may have been extremists who carried out those horrific acts that day, it was in fact still a group of Muslim extremists - and they weren't wearing special "terror gear" that told their fellow passengers the wild ride they had in store for them.

The reality is simple.  In the post-911 world that we now live in, we are told on a daily basis that we are supposed to; that we have a duty to; remain aware of suspicious activity and to alert the authorities when something seems out of the norm - to remain "vigilant."  Forgive me for being close-minded, but when someone tells me to "be on the lookout" for a someone fitting fill-in-the-blank description, I either contact authorities or get the hell out of there.  If someone has all the tell-tale signs of airborne Jihad, forgive me for sleeping with one eye open.  I really don't care if feelings get hurt.  While traditional Muslim garb may hardly even garner a reaction from me on an elevator or in line at the deli, similar attire on a Delta Flight will certainly get my attention, so if that makes Juan Williams a racist or even insensitive, lump me in and start the social reconditioning immediately because I need help.

New York Times:  NPR has terminated its contract with Juan Williams, one of its senior news analysts, after he made comments about Muslims on the Fox News Channel.

NPR said in a statement that it gave Mr. Williams notice of his termination on Wednesday night.

The move came after Mr. Williams, who is also a Fox News political analyst, appeared on the “The O’Reilly Factor” on Monday. On the show, the host, Bill O’Reilly, asked him to respond to the notion that the United States was facing a “Muslim dilemma.” Mr. O’Reilly said, “The cold truth is that in the world today jihad, aided and abetted by some Muslim nations, is the biggest threat on the planet.”

Mr. Williams said he concurred with Mr. O’Reilly.

He continued: “I mean, look, Bill, I’m not a bigot. You know the kind of books I’ve written about the civil rights movement in this country. But when I get on the plane, I got to tell you, if I see people who are in Muslim garb and I think, you know, they are identifying themselves first and foremost as Muslims, I get worried. I get nervous."

NPR said in its statement that the remarks “were inconsistent with our editorial standards and practices, and undermined his credibility as a news analyst with NPR.”

Alicia C. Shepard, the NPR ombudswoman, said at the time that Mr. Williams was a “lightning rod” for the public radio organization in part because he “tends to speak one way on NPR and another on Fox.”

Ms. Shepard said she had received 378 listener e-mails in 2008 listing complaints and frustrations about Mr. Williams.

How bout we all send an email a day complaining about one of their Lefty commentators and see if we can clean house with all of them by this time next year.  Take my 365, and all 13 or so of you depending on my traffic today, and maybe just maybe NPR can do some actual reporting of the news in latter months of 2011.

------------------------------

From Michelle Malkin -  Guess who stirred up the pot to get Williams fired?

Think Progress and the Huffington Post:

Another point worth thinking about here...  Isn't this the same crowd that always tells us that minorities can't be racists?

----------------------------------

A comment at Big Journalism asks this question

Are Juan Williams’ statements worse that Obama’s regarding his grandmother?

“My grandmother… is a typical white person. If she sees somebody on the street that she doesn’t know, there’s a reaction in her that doesn’t go away and it comes out in the wrong way.”

There is a second part to this story which we will eventually figure out. NPR is in serious financial jeopardy. While congress has kept it’s payments at a general trend...at some point, the NPR management folks (probably in the 1990s) started to up the salary level of management and journalists. I read an article last summer that dealt with this growing issue of a structure that would be unable to pay keep up with the trend.

The article rattled off ten NPR journalists that were pulling in a significant income. Toss in their health care program (which is 4-star), their TSP (401k matching), and the other pluses...and the organization is sinking with the big-name journalists.

The way I see it...if they could find any NPR journalist with a reason to terminate...then they’d gladly dump the guy. As for folks hoping to get hired up to replace Juan...forget it. They will promote from within and the new guy will get nothing near Juan’s old salary. I’ll predict two or three others are terminated in the same fashion by spring of next year.

This is the second time Juan Williams has suffered at the hands of those whose values he has espoused.

Perhaps now he will finally learn that the liberal mindset is not about tolerance they would have all believe it is.

I’m thinking the Tea Party central offices should take up the Juan Williams cudgel. He’s a lefty true, but thought police tactics by a govt. funded agency seems beyond the pale. Use their own dopey laws against them. They should also address the racism absurdities as a side benefit. Finally, this muslim extremists only nonsense can be addressed. Muslims are on the attack in China, Russia, the US, the Mid-East, Europe, Africa today. This very minute. Ok it is only the extremists. So what if that’s 750 million of them ?

If a conservative is “someone who has been mugged,” there is hope for a man who has been mugged by liberals.

Juan is an idiot and a liberal. He knows what is correct but he will defend liberals all the time. I don’t care if I ever see him again. He defended Clinton for all the years since he came to Washington. Juan can just go away.

.....if I see people who are in Muslim garb and I think, you know, they are identifying themselves first and foremost as Muslims, I get worried.....

That's it? Rather innocuous. Well, I'm glad Juan is no longer working for us at NPR. To hell with that network. Maybe this will open his eyes to the true nature of his liberal friends.

Can we fire NPR.

Unfortunately no, at least with this Congress. You and I have to keep funding it with our tax dollars.

Calling Revs. Sharpton and Jackson, RACISM, RACISM, RACISM. March on NPR. Boycott NPR. Label NPR as a racist organization.

Revs. Sharpton and Jackson? Where are you? Speak up, I can’t hear you. (Silence)

...”Maybe we’ll pick up another convert”...

Could be..There is nothing like reality hitting one between the eyes. Juan is free now to use that common sense all the time. He doesn’t have to carry the water for the very leftist NPR anymore, unless he chooses to. My guess is that he will find a better home permanently on FOX. This is not the first time he has been abused for stating his true feelings. The nature of communism is to be very visible in the abuse of someone as a message to anyone else who might be thinking they have freedom of speech or freedom of anything. Any person voting Democrat in the upcoming election should be considered an antagonist to life, liberty and pursuit of happiness. It has become that simple. I live on a long street and the only political signs on my street are in the yard of a lawyer. He has placed about five signs of the most liberal leftists running in our state and in our town on his property..The rest of the street is mostly conservative..I am sure many of our neighbors flush with disgust as they pass by those signs on that expensive property gained through years in a profession known for currying favor with corrupt politicians. I don’t know about all of you, but I am finding it harder and harder to keep on my friendly face to these people when I encounter them in public. I do not see a neighbor anymore..I see someone who is an enemy of the future of America.

Soros just gave a huge sum of money to NPR to develope a “new news gathering organization”. Any bets that there was an unsaid deal to dump anyone connected with FOX as soon as they could?

Fox steals away or hires the rejects (usually too conservative) from other cable stations all the time. Tucker Carlson got his show canned from PMSNBC and is now on Fox. Greta came over from CNN, a bunch of the Fox Business News people were lured from CNBC and other stations. So Juan will now get himself a much more full-time and better gig on Fox, mark my words. And I suspect an attitude change by Juan as to his politics. When Greta got to Fox she was much more liberal. Not any more. She’s come over from the dark side. As has Tucker who always had to couch his words on PMSNBC. Wouldn’t be surprised to one day see Joe Scarborough on Fox when he has outlived his useful idiot status on PMSNBC.

They say a conservative is a liberal who has been mugged.

Juan has been mugged financially and they tried to muzzle his freedom of speech.

It will be interesting to see his growth or lack their of, going forward post this event that is impacting him..

NPR didn’t like Juan being on Fox, and this was the first time he’s crossed the line just barely enough for them to can him.

Exactly.

Btw, I wonder what Mara Liasson thinks of this. I wonder if she's nervous. She's like an East German and the Stasi has just disappeared one of her close friends. Will she be next? Does she have her mind right or is she a thought criminal like Juan?
