Is Beck Right or Wrong About Tea Party Outfits?
The Blaze ^ | 16 Sep | Seidl

Glenn Beck is no stranger to public criticism. Usually, that criticism comes from entrenched critics. But today, Beck was chided by some of his most loyal fans. What’s got everyone so upset?

Beck’s stance on playing dress-up.

Recently, Beck started imploring Tea Party supporters to lose the costumes, and homemade signs, so as not to give detractors ammunition. ( ... )

He repeated the charge on this morning’s radio show, taking umbrage with one costume in particular: “What’s more effective, you as Betsy Ross or you as somebody who looks just like their neighbor, not dressed as Betsy Ross?”

( ... )

“I‘m not saying you can’t go dressed as Betsy Ross or the Statue of Liberty –that would be a totalitarian state … [But] if you want to truly make a difference, it is now time that the Tea Party takes the next step. … And first impressions make all the difference.”

Show me where people have turned out to protest our government — who were not PAID to be there -— since the days of the hippie dippie flower children? They haven’t... so your argument is a strawman...... people don’t have to wear suits, but they need to save the crazy stuff for Halloween.

If you have ever worked in business you know that in order to move up to management you have to dress the part and get respect

Winning the hearts and minds of the public is not the same as "working a business" I have been home for 17 yrs. I wear simple comfortable mom clothing and believe it or not have reached upper management in my family and like to think have some respect in my community regardless if I am dressed in a suit or a Betsy Ross costume. Personally I am the one at a tea party rally without a sign but my heart sings to see so many people who love this country and have proudly and thoughtfully made up a sign to share their thoughts. IMO that is America and those people are the ones who made the tea party great. Just plain exciting!! Tea party signs and costumes are the very heartbeat of the movement.

If your sign has a gross error of spelling...you look stupid.

And it will be featured on the evening news and in the newspapers if any of the leftists in the mainstream media covering the protest (if they cover it) notice it.

“When we did the Get Out of Cheney’s House protests we had thousands of newbies join us for weeks without incident or bad press.”

Ok, I found this funny...because I’m pretty politically aware...and I never heard of it. I had to Google and it only has a couple of hits on Google. So...maybe it’s more a situation of no press, rather than bad press.

The tea parties are huge. There’s no doubt it’s a behemoth idea rolling across the USA. It would be bad if someone sucked all the fun out of it, but I don’t think that THAT is what Beck is suggesting.

I think he’s just saying that SOME are not being decorous...and there should be a little bit of decorum and dignity.

And spell your signs correctly. Please.

In my area...my family went to a Tea Party Express event that I was unable to attend. From what I understand, the only offensive sign there was a sign held by a liberal saying “Tea Party = KKK”.

Here’s the story:

My favorite part of this teeny tiny story is that the woman with the sign calling everyone KKK (and IIRC had a Democratic Underground bumper sticker on it) said.

“I asked Siefker if she had negative experiences during the debates. She answered, “No. No, not at all, none. In fact they offered me a free t-shirt and a thing to sign up for a free raffle and everybody’s been nice.”

I really don't dislike the guy, but he just seems to be all over the place. One day he sounds like he's ready to grab a pitchfork and lead the rebellion, and then the next day he is admonishing people about their signs, and later he is talking about loving your enemy. With a radio and TV show he is certainly in a powerful position and I wonder if he is not somewhat afraid of his own power.

As I said before here, if you tell people they can’t have fun and express themselves you will kill the Tea Party movement.

I understand him. He is very serious but mixes up his approach. The attack upon him is orchestrated by the left. Just watch.

Fair enough. But would you object to telling people that they should at least consider how the costume they might wear or sign they might carry will be depicted in the mainstream media and look to outsiders and expect them to care about it making conservatives look bad if it likely will?

Isn’t it interesting (and troubling)how just the prospect that the MSM or Demorats may think tea partiers are uneducated yahoos has so many people scrambling to make sure the rank and file throw down their signs and wear “serious” clothing. Get a grip people...don’t let them set the tone.

The press was there. They didn't give us 'Cindy Sheehan' style coverage because we were conservatives, but we completely dominated the liberal Al Gore supporters there. Freepers who were around then know what we did. Al and Tipper had to switch around bedrooms to avoid the sound of the protests echoing through the Vice President's official residence where they were plotting to steal the election.

There's a good C-SPAN video of one afternoon of the protests. We were also featured in newspapers, even the front page, wearing costumes and carrying signs!
