Is Beck Right or Wrong About Tea Party Outfits?
The Blaze ^ | 16 Sep | Seidl

Glenn Beck is no stranger to public criticism. Usually, that criticism comes from entrenched critics. But today, Beck was chided by some of his most loyal fans. What’s got everyone so upset?

Beck’s stance on playing dress-up.

Recently, Beck started imploring Tea Party supporters to lose the costumes, and homemade signs, so as not to give detractors ammunition. ( ... )

He repeated the charge on this morning’s radio show, taking umbrage with one costume in particular: “What’s more effective, you as Betsy Ross or you as somebody who looks just like their neighbor, not dressed as Betsy Ross?”

( ... )

“I‘m not saying you can’t go dressed as Betsy Ross or the Statue of Liberty –that would be a totalitarian state … [But] if you want to truly make a difference, it is now time that the Tea Party takes the next step. … And first impressions make all the difference.”

protesting is like going to the funeral, we’re in a state of mourning at the state of the country

If you have a sign that has gross errors....you’ll wind up EVERYWHERE online

So we should stop carrying signs in the fear that someone in the throngs of thousands may carry a sign with a grammar error? Who cares. A Kardashian sister can give her sister a naked bikini wax on national tv and is still admired and we are worried about a spelling error on a sign??

Have you ever read Orwell’s 1984? Is it time we all wear the same blue overalls? NO THANKS.

Personally, I don't wear blue overalls everyday. Nobody tells me what to wear and I doubt you either, at least not yet.

I don't have anything to celebrate at this juncture in time, however, to dress up in a Statue of Liberty costume. Yes, it would honor the past and our great God given freedom. Giving what we're up against, so much, I think it's not very wise. It's a somber time. People can relate to everyday Americans. It's now or never. I really believe that our country hinges on the November elections. Costumes are symbolic, to a point. It's the Constitution that matters, words, real and God given. Let's focus on that, and that alone. The rest is trappings that gives the Anti-American Media to focus on for DU, Kos, etc.

Yeah, that being taken seriously by dressing like a conformist has really worked well, hasn’t it?

Well, hasn’t it???

You start telling people they can’t have fun and express themselves and you will kill the Tea Party movement. That’s partly how activism was killed off on FR years ago.

Beck is not right with everything. I disagree with him sometimes. I think he’s a showman and provocateur.

But, in this, he is probably right.

And personally, it’s hard to see photos of some signs at these rallies that have really big errors.

If you care enough to put it on a sign...spell it correctly.

Threats of violence on signs are ALWAYS wrong.

Stick to the important messages and don’t have a picture of Obama as an African witch doctor....because while the politically incorrect think it’s kind of funny post-Obamacare...it can REALLY be perceived as racist by others.

I don't have a problem with what he teaches, but I do have a problem when he thinks he has the authority to tell others how to express themselves. People are worried about people in costumes looking childish, yet, Beck spends half his daily radio show acting like a junior high school clown. I suppose watching him munch on M&Ms and other goodies is not childish television? Whats with the sportscoat, bluejeans and tennis shoes? Doesn't seem very professional and serious to me.

No...you should NOT stop carrying signs...but you should make sure your signs don’t have huge errors. Have someone spell check those signs.

If your sign has a gross error of spelling...you look stupid.

Beck doesn't like signs and costumes that he can't control because he thinks the content if some of the signs, etc. might embarrass him or conflict with his finely tuned message. He is beginning to see himself as the Master of Ceremonies for the Tea Party movement and wants to dominate its content and direction.

Fat chance of that, but he does mean well.

So thats a yes or no?

In any area of life, would you take someone seriously if they wore a costume and then tried to convince you on something?

We are trying to convince America to reduce the size of government. People wearing costumes may inspire you, but they look un-serious to the non converted.

I've been doing since for over a decade. The costumes and signs are fun and they work. Being a stiff doesn't.

I'm not suggesting being a stiff. I'm suggesting coming off as normal. There are people who can pull that off in costume and with signs. There are also people who can't and don't.

When we did the Get Out of Cheney's House protests we had thousands of newbies join us for weeks without incident or bad press. They had signs and some wore costumes. We had fun, made our point and got no bad press because we policed our own but didn't get all Glenn Beck on people.

Like I said, it's really less about costumes and signs than about not giving ammunition for the media to falsely portray the people there. If you can police your own, then that's great, but Beck can't individually police everyone who shows up at a rally with tens or even hundreds of thousands of people and all it takes are a handful to problematic costumes and signs to give the mainstream media their defining shot of the protest. Whenever you try to create a blanket rule rather than treat something on a case-by-case basis, the blanket rule is either going to go too far or not far enough in many cases. And I think people are getting way to hung up about the specifics of Beck's point than the spirit of it, which is simply to look appealing to the mainstream.

Kardashian is not trying to convince America of anything. What she does has absolutely nothing to do with what Tea Partiers do.

I only listen to him when he gets all weepy and sincere.

Me too! I particularly like it when he starts his Jimmy Swaggart act.

You start telling people they can’t have fun and express themselves and you will kill the Tea Party movement. That’s partly how activism was killed off on FR years ago.

I think this is also a very legitimate and important point, but it is really impossible to find a middle ground between people having fun and expressing themselves and showing some consideration of how their behavior and message is going to be portrayed in the mainstream media? Does this have to be an excluded middle argument?

What is the point of protesting and who do the protests serve?
