Oliver Stone in Context
The Looking Spoon ^ | 7-27-2010 | Jared H. McAndersen

It's not news that many Hollywood elites like Oliver Stone are apologists for, if not downright friendly to leftist dictators, and are more than likely commies themselves.

Now Oliver Stone's latest documentary intellectual snuff film "Secret History of America" seeks to put guys like Hitler and Stalin "in context." (according to this Newsbusters post)

If you want to place bets on how many days will pass before I will buckle down and watch that fine piece of cinema, I would take the over on that.....WAY OVER. Even then you still might lose, because I don't how your bookie would be able to gauge the over on eternity.

The only movie I remember seeing of his was World Trade Center, and that's because watching it didn't propel me into some leftist twilight zone. At this point, however, I think there is only one other Oliver Stone movie I would ever want to plunk down stimulus money for the rest of my time in this life....

Hitler and Stalin should indeed be considered in context. They caused the deaths of millions of people. Deliberately. Calmly. Without remorse.

Exactly. People who argue numbers miss the point that when you get to that level, it isn't about motive or vileness, it is simply about operation. Just because Stalin killed more in the long run, doesn't make Hitler less evil. I hope they are both Satan's personal b***s in hell.

I don’t presume to speak for duffus, as I don’t know him at all.

But my guess is that it means (in a mixed-metaphor-malaprop sort of way) that if Stone hasn’t insulted, ridiculed or defamed you or your favorite establishment or hero yet, he will soon.

A shame, since Stone is not stupid, but for whatever reason (including drugs) he’s quite insane.

I think you’re right shibumi...sorry duffus, I was a little confused.

I also agree, something is definitely not right with the guy, its such a shame because he obviously knows how to make a movie. I don’t know if you saw World Trade Center, but I went in to it on the defense knowing it was Stone’s movie, and walked out thinking it was really good and touching.

It’s too bad he can’t bring that to anything else...

Actually stone is not insane. He does do the most daring thing and that is to dare people to question what they thought they new to be facts. Both sides and a few in between have twisted the facts of history to the point that it bares little resemblance to reality when it hit’s the classroom.

Pick any section of history. Pick any piece you like. I promise that what you learned in Kindergarten through grad school is biased and wrong. When we get to argue about is what direction did the bias take.

Starting with the Civil war as the best example of bias reporting and creative history you will likely ever see. A war over taxes, states rights and had absolutely nothing to do with slavery. Not until they needed an emotional excuse to justify their butchery on the battlefield did slavery even get mentioned.

Civil war II is one the way. Taxes, states rights and some excuse yet to be determined.

*Sigh* You certainly are one to talk about bias and insanity.

It wasn't that the Northern states went to war to free the slaves. It was that the Southern slave states feared a threat to their system and declared themselves to be outside of the union, forming their own nation.

Northerners didn't believe in unilateral secession and didn't recognize the secession resolutions or the Confederacy. Southerners fired on a US fort. And the war started.

It very much did have a lot to do with slavery. Without slavery there wouldn't have been widespread panic in the slave states when Lincoln was elected. Without slavery there wouldn't have been secession and war in 1860.

Start you history studies with newspapers printed in the 1820’s and then along to about 1860. After about 1862 all non pro union opinions were in jail.

I double dog dare you.

The below is why it’s so hard to find out what was really going on.

BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA:

A PROCLAMATION

Whereas, it has become necessary to call into service not only volunteers but also portions of the militia of the States by draft in order to suppress the insurrection existing in the United States, and disloyal persons are not adequately restrained by the ordinary processes of law from hindering this measure and from giving aid and comfort in various ways to the insurrection;

Now, therefore, be it ordered, first, that during the existing insurrection and as a necessary measure for suppressing the same, all Rebels and Insurgents, their aiders and abettors within the United States, and all persons discouraging volunteer enlistments, resisting militia drafts, or guilty of any disloyal practice, affording aid and comfort to Rebels against the authority of United States, shall be subject to martial law and liable to trial and punishment by Courts Martial or Military Commission:

Second. That the Writ of Habeas Corpus is suspended in respect to all persons arrested, or who are now, or hereafter during the rebellion shall be, imprisoned in any fort, camp, arsenal, military prison, or other place of confinement by any military authority of by the sentence of any Court Martial or Military Commission.

In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand, and caused the seal of the United States to be affixed.

Done at the City of Washington this twenty fourth day of September, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixty-two, and of the Independence of the United States the 87th.

ABRAHAM LINCOLN

By the President:

WILLIAM H. SEWARD, Secretary of State.

The end result was any non Union news paper writer/editor either shut up or went to jail for the duration.
