SNIP
As we approached, we found an extensive oil slick that stretched about 20 nm (20 miles) along the southward flowing jet which merged with the northern front of the Loop Current. ...
SNIP
The combination of models and satellite images, along with our shipboard observations and ROFFS daily analysis had helped us to identify and study this previously unidentified oil plume located off Floridas southwest coast and heading toward the Tortugas.

Just damn.
Makes me unbelievably angry. Can’t imagine those who live there.
I’m guess that the US lack of leadership will not be appreciated if the spill contaminates more than the Gulf of Mexico. Which it sounds like it might.
Yes, time for another round of golf. There are plenty of nice courses in the panhandle. I’m sure O’s social secretary could easily get a foursome together.
Which brings up a question - does he have separate social secretaries, one for golf, one for vacations, one to set up attractive photo sessions? Setting up his golf outings looks like it could be a fulltime job.
I am kicking myself I never did the whole cruise to the tortugas before to snorkel the reef.
This whole thing just makes me so mad. That place is going to get destroyed by the oil.
NOAA Administrator Jane Lubchenco said that the tests conducted at three sites by a University of South Florida research vessel confirmed oil as far as 3,300 feet below the surface 42 miles northeast of the well site. Oil also was found in a sub-surface sample 142 miles southeast of the spill, but further tests showed that oil is "not consistent" with oil from the spill.
Lubchenco said the water analysis "indicate there is definitely oil sub surface. It's in very low concentrations" of less than 0.5 parts per million. Additional samples from another research vessel are being tested, she said.
In case anyone is interested in what we are about kill.
Get a good last look.

This place is about as good as it gets in terms of “pristine”....
Really sad.
‘we’?
You mean Obama’s dithering and playing golf, is going to kill..
He obviously keeps misunderstanding people. When they say "Gulf" he hears "golf."
Tortugas = Fort Jefferson National Park and a vast nature presurve, a marine nature preserve.
If Obama permits that while not letting those that can clean up even if they are non union, he will split his base.
It will be enviro wackos vs: union wackos.......what a great turn of events
Link..says not found
Let me know when it reaches Martha’s Vineyard - then I know it will be cleaned up and taken care of.
Thanks for the reminder of my failures to go there when I took trips to the Keys.
This is just making me sick to my stomach.
But, but, I’ve been told by several freepers that this is not that big a deal, it is overblown, the gulf will not die, nature will heal itself, bla, bla, bla...
