It's been 47 years since Dealey Plaza and we still long for closure

The news of John F. Kennedy’s assassination was so shocking, so unexpected that it generated a gasp heard ‘round the world. People simply stopped breathing for a second. If you lived through it, you know what I mean. If you didn’t, ask your parents or grandparents. They will tell you precisely what they were doing and how they felt when they heard the news.

The overwhelming quest for closure continues to this day. We are still searching for answers. Over two million visitors – from all over the world – make a solemn pilgrimage to the grassy knoll in Dealey Plaza each year. Most come to see what they have only read about or seen on film. Others come because they feel it is sacred ground.

Though I was only eleven years old in 1963, my grief was as tangible as any adult. Buoyed by Kennedy’s “…ask not what your country can do for you speech”, I felt the promise of America. But when I heard the news of his death, I was engulfed with a sadness that was more profound than any emotion I had ever experienced.

On that cold November morning in 1963, I stood stoically with my family on Constitution Avenue awaiting the funeral cortege. Thousands of people lined the streets in mournful silence. I heard the cortege before I saw it. The relentless drumbeats reverberated through the Capital, conveying the finality of death....

Let it go already! He was a minor president, a false idol, and a hypocrite to boot. Being assassinated was the best thing that could have happened to his legacy. But because of his fake martyrdom, we’ve had to endure almost half a century of Camelot myths, spoiled scions of a corrupt political dynasty, and an endless parade of boo-hoo retrospectives and hagiographies so treacly they induce a diabetic coma.

Enough already. Like Generalissimo Francisco Franco, he’s still dead.

You are right about the Mob angle, at least according to a really good book on the subject called Ultimate Sacrifice.

I think it was discovery Channel that did a test shoot and found the Warren Commission was accurate in their report, that there was no magic bullet in that it did exactly what the commission claimed it did.

That and going to the building and seeing the place for myself settled my curiosity that Oswald could have made the shots exactly as described.

Anyone shooter that has stood in the window can easily see that the shots taken could have even been made by a handgun they were so close. The conspiracy theorists want everyone to think the shots could only be made by an expert marksman or sniper; yet, they were literally within a stone’s throw from the window, 75 yards if I remember correctly.

Conspiracy theorists want everyone to think the bullet’s trajectory could not have been as described, but they fail to seat everyone where they sat. The rear seats were 6 inches higher than conspiracy theorists describe. The Warren Commission described them correctly. The Discovery Channel made the shots and even had the bullet land in Governor Connally’s lap as happened in the real world.

Oswald was a devout narcissist and wanted attention. He even stood on street corners passing out Communist literature while being heckled. He didn’t believe in Communism, he believed in getting attention. The shots he took were easy to make and they hit their mark. Simple as that.

“The overwhelming quest for closure continues to this day. We are still searching for answers.”

We understand, Chuckie. The pain of lose is too much for you to bear anymore and the Thorazine doesn’t quite take the edge off like it used to. You know what you have to do, don’t you, Chuckie? It like wearing a backless hospital gown in a wind storm...all you can think about is closure! closure! closure!

Quite rubbing your eyes with those tiny fists and head to AREA 51!! That’s right! The whole assassination thing was faked, Kennedy has been held prisoner there for all these years. It’s a CONSPIRACY, Chuckie!!!!

Most of the theories were so complicated or kooky that I thought someone surely would have spilled the beans by now.

The theory I like, just because of the sheer irony, is one I had read in one of the '60s mens' magazines (and never seen again).

The article claimed that Oswald, and only Oswald, was the shooter. OK, big deal, a lot of people say that. The kicker was that Kennedy was killed by mistake - that Oswald was only a so-so shooter. Oswald was trying to kill Connolly and missed.

Oswald, because of the "undesirable" military discharge, couldn't get a GI loan for a house or go to school under the GI Bill. He repeatedly petitioned Connolly to override his bad discharge for the loans and Connolly refused each time. Therefor, according to the writer, Oswald decided to get revenge.

I've always had a suspicion that if there was a cover up - it was that Kennedy, being killed by mistake, was a rather pathetic ending. So . . . the Powers That Be decided to make a martyr out of him as a more fitting legacy.

First time I've heard that theory. Refresh my memory. Connolly WAS seated beside Kennedy, wasn't he? I know Jackie was on the other side because he slumped in her lap.

Connolly was also hit once and grazed once, as I recall. But Jackie wasn't even grazed and JFK was hit multiple times.

This makes it possible, albeit unlikely, that Connolly was the intended target, but JFK just got in the way. I'd be very interested in reading the article if you could ever find it. The fact that it disappeared and was never mentioned again makes me all the more suspicious.

One thing is for certain-- that single event transformed JFK from being just another mediocre president into being a martyr.
