We're still shopping for the right laptop. It is quite an investment, and with so many choices and options, where does one begin. Naturally, the first questions is one of function. What will we be using the laptop for. Gaming? Small business? There is also the price tag to consider.
Our interest lies in two main functions which involve academic studies as well as recording music. With so many brands/models to choose from, it appears that the most widely used laptops are the Mac Pro and the XP. Between these two choices, which would you recommend and why?

No. At first, one might think that, but no. The fact that the iPad screen needs to be backlit strains the eyes; backlit technology doesn't work if you want to read a book outside in bright sunshine. The Kindle only uses power when you turn the page, and if you choose to turn the internet connection off, as a reader device only, the Kindle can last fully charged for days (heck, or even weeks).
You may be correct - who knows what sliver of the market I'm in-- the point that I'm making is that their devices don't work for me I have never said Apple sucks, or that Apple doesn't work at all, .. just that there are elements to their product line which I wish they would accommodate my needs, so that I could be 100% happy.
The thing that frustrated me the most with Apple is that they have the technology – heck I was willing to pay extra for a Touch iMac; for a Blu-Ray Dvd Drive.. Heavens, I've been to the Apple store enough – why can't I select: "Add Touch capability $100.00 extra " ... "Add Blu Ray Drive $200.00 extra" .. I would have paid it. No questions asked. I'm not expecting those items for free, and I understand not everyone wants or needs them. But there was never the suggestion that people with special needs would be considered by Apple, and that they could optionally configure their computer with technology that Apple has already pioneered even at an additional cost. I guess I found being ignored the most disturbing cut of all.
Thank you for you kind wishes on my husband. My prayers for your speedy recovery. It was a shock for him to go from totally bedridden (1 year) to finally returning an interest in computers again to finding that the computer couldn't work for him at all. He couldn't even use a mouse. Speech recognition and touch were elevated in our priority levels.
My needs still remain – whether or not Apple chooses to recognize them. Right now, Apple has chosen to ignore special needs, so like any true consumer, I go elsewhere. That is my right. And if I'm a small sliver of society, I found others like HP who can take care of me. Remember, I'm in the same sliver when I was an Apple consumer while HP was developing a lot of its products, and HP could accommodate me, that Apple thought was unimportant. So, HP got my money, not Apple. HP met a need. Apple did not.
I tell my friends that buying a computer is a lot like buying a car. What are you going to use your car for? One trip to the store a week? – Then get a Smart Car (maybe a bicycle :-) ) A Ferrari is way overkill for this usage pattern. Do you plan to drive in the rain? Then don't by British Leyland (ha! My first car was an Austin 1800). etc, etc. I think you get the analogy.
Apple Computer meets a lot of people's needs. That is self-evident. It doesn't meet mine, even if I were to pay extra. And that appears to be Apple's choice.
