When the Obama administration put together it stimulus package all the talk was about building roads, fixing bridges, building schools you know, the kind of jobs that people envision when they think of jobs that the government should encourage while improving our infrastructure. Thats why we heard incessant references to shovel ready jobs. It brought to mind images of people actually working, wielding shovels, running construction equipment, widening roads to fix traffic congestion, replacing dilapidated schools. In other words, building things.
So hows that working out in your neighborhood, city, country or state? In Oregon, those "shovel ready jobs" aren't. They borrowed $175 million to create 3,000 jobs. Here's the report. A state report released Friday shows that of 499 projects, 73 have started. The number of "retained" jobs, 270. The number of new jobs to date, 16. That's not much bang for the buck.
In Virginia, wherever you go the talk is about building roads and how to pay for them. When the talk turns to funding that road building the answer is always to be found in Richmond, Virginias capital. Yet the Federal Government passed a stimulus package funded with $787 billion dollars of our tax money with the promise that it would be spent on projects just like this to create jobs that would employ the unemployed. So why are we talking tax increases instead of that stimulus money?
We were told that if the stimulus was not passed, unemployment would exceed 9%; with the stimulus it would only reach 8%. The official unemployment rate is 10.2%

I’m only 45 and not quite shovel ready yet.
Friends of Obama hay have other ideas about it though.
And how many of those are government jobs? I would bet all of them.
Teddy Kennedy was shove-ready, wasn’t he? :)
They won’t be here until Obama is running for re-election. They should start in late 2011.
Yes, the shovels were passed out to Dems. It is the MANURE they are now trying to PASS IN CONGRESS.
“Shovel-ready jobs”? LOL....That’s just PC-speak for “There’s gonna be a lot of crap produced by this Socialist government, and we’re gonna need a cleanup crew.”
The RAT infested States it is way above the 10.2 mark. Kalifornia and NY, the garbage patch, are getting what they wished for, hope and change.
Health Care Advisory Panelist?
“It brought to mind images of people actually working...”
It reminded me of those guys marching in Germany with shovels on their shoulders just before they got the guns.
There is no shovels. There is only brown shirts and clubs.
I think we are in a very similar situation to what happened in Germany. We have an idealogue like Hitler. He has a very similar agenda, and appears to be going down this same path. I would not be suprised if people began to be arrested for being conservative.
At the cemetery and funeral parlor
Libs desperately want to believe that jobs are created by government and poor people spending tax-payer money. But the jobless rate just refuses to go down. The answer is staring them in the face (cut taxes for businesses and individuals), but for political and ideological reasons they won’t do that. Obama does not want to alienate the hard leftists (of which he is a member) after decades of preaching about the “evils” of capitalism and free markets. It’s anathema to libs to suggest that less government is better than more government. Now they’re in a bind. Hoist by their own petard.
I know of only one “shovel ready job” The one given to Zero to pave the road to Marxism-Leninism for the US
You get it and I get it. Unfortunately, Bill Oreilly doesn’t seem to get it.
That is because O’Reilly wants to interview him again. He is being driven by ratings. Beck on the other hand cares more about the country. His ratings follow, because more Americans see the truth about Obama.
Did he honestly think they would get in line to shovel dirt around roads that don't need any new improvements?
Sheesh.
