CBS News has learned that up to 60,000 people have cancelled their AARP memberships since July 1, angered over the group's position on health care...
(Excerpt) Read more at examiner.com ...
My folks were among the people canceling. They were members only because of the AARP supplemental health insurance “medigap” policy.
Ironic. AARP offers medical insurance, probably getting a cut off the proceeds, but they support reform that destroys their base. Liberal self destruction.........
The generation brought up thinking FDR was the salvation of the U.S.A. joined AARP almost reflexively but maybe the younger people will think about it first.
They were horrified.
I feel bad for the older members that have dementia or an illness where comprehension is not there. These folks will directly experience his cold hearted and cruel policies.
“CBS News has learned that up to 60,000 people have cancelled their AARP memberships since July 1”
60,000 compared to what? What is the total of how many are/were enrolled? If we know the numbers, we can get an accurate reading on its significance.
If the membership number has been posted, I missed it.
Thank you.
Correction:
My parents IMMEDIATELY withdrew from AARP.
They were horrified.

I refused to join AARP because of their liberal political positions.
P.S.
I googled for an answer to my question, but nothing. All they want to say is how great they are.
“I feel bad for the older members that have dementia or an illness where comprehension is not there.”
That IS terrible.
They claim to be 40-million strong.

P.S. again....ignore, ignore!!!
They claim to have 35 million from age 50 and up.
Therefore, 60,000 sounds like very little if this is true.
Their magazines are filled with ways to avoid or reduce paying for goods and services forcing those of us who are still working to pay for these services for them in some way.
Articles about how to keep your wealth and avoid paying for say, a nursing home. Yet you get to keep up to a million if it is in an irrevocable trust, forcing the next generation to pay for it in higher taxes.
I read an article about a homeless couple. Doing just fine in their Winnebago. I wish I could just take the $75,000. Winnie bye bye.
I am a senior but there is no way I want to shift the burden onto my children or some other young couple just starting out in life. I will not join
I will admit that I still have my current membership.
However, after receiving numerous emails from them in support of Obamacare, I sent replies back every time that I will not be renewing my membership in the future if the keep on supporting Obama.
Since then, total peace and quiet on the AARP email front.
Like Obama they are a bunch of liars and masters of double speak. You read their emails and see 100% support for Obamacare, you hear Obama profess that he has their full support, but then they back track and come on O’Reilly and Hannity shows and claim that they do not support Obamacare.
Do they think senior citizens are stupid, senile, or cannot read and comprehend what their motives are???
I will be looking at the alternative organization.
Thank you.
35-40 million is quite a lot compared to only 60,000 gatos.
Thank you again.
That is what I have done in the past. I have not received anything from the AARP in a number of years. I guess they have finally scratched me off their list.
Yah, you might want that 10% discount for the casket they want to put you in!
Oh, I should have thought of that before I cancelled. My bad. Oh, well, I kept forgetting to get my 10% discount anyway so I guess I won’t miss it.
I agree that the number not joining is also high but there is no way to measure this.
But don’t get too excited.
ARRP spokeman said:
“AARP gained some 400,000 new members during the same period and that 1.5 million members renewed their membership.”
With a membership they claim of 40 million
If these numbers are true the loses don’t mean much.
Now that I have had a few minutes to dwell on 40 million or so, that sure is a high number for a country that has a population of legals of 300,000,000.
In your opinion, could AARP be exaggerating? Your thoughts. I am personally startled by those numbers and wonder if they are real.
Thank you.

You should also consider that the 60k number is limited by the number of people answering phones. Wait times of more than 25 minutes have been common over the last two weeks. I suspect that this number will rise significantly over time, as the rush slowsAssuming it does.
Further P.S.
My little calculator tells me that 7.5 folks are members of AARP.
I find that a tad high.
