“CBS News has learned that up to 60,000 people have cancelled their AARP memberships since July 1”

60,000 compared to what? What is the total of how many are/were enrolled? If we know the numbers, we can get an accurate reading on its significance.

If the membership number has been posted, I missed it.

You should also consider that the 60k number is limited by the number of people answering phones. Wait times of more than 25 minutes have been common over the last two weeks. I suspect that this number will rise significantly over time, as the rush slows—Assuming it does.
