Completely and utterly ridiculous.
vehicular euthanasia
What a waste. My family could use that Volvo.
Nicely done.
“...but there seems to be something unsettling about this state sanctioned ‘autocide.’”
It’s a trial balloon for Socialized Medicine when they will stuff the old, the non-tax-revenue producer, the infirm, the mentally ill, the disabled and unwanted newborns in the car trunks before they compact them.
Think I’m kidding? ;)
Commie Democrat Street Theater, death to the symbol of the bourgeois pig, long live the goddess Mother Earth.
Reminds me of something out of a sci-fi movie...this is just disturbing!!!
Honestly, we’re not losing much by getting mid-’80s American cars off the road. There aren’t many vehicles from that time that are at all interesting, and most of the ones that are get such good mileage that you’d be hard-pressed to find something that you could trade it on e.g. Honda Civic Si, Porsche 944, CRX, etc.
That’s just wrong. Pretty nice ‘clunker’ /s.
It’s just an engine...but to destroy a car with only 90,000 miles to receive tax payer money for a cracker box and to satisfy a radical Socialist president is stupid. I drive my trucks well over 200,000 miles then sell them as work trucks for around $2500. My 88 Chevy Sliverado I sold in 93 is still on a farm in Comanche Texas hauling hay.
FEW of the so called green and environmentalist arguments for more fuel efficient cars take into consideration the pollution generated through the manufacturing of the car, where energy inputs are enormous (Think of what sort of energy is required to liquefy and cast an aluminum engine block). Few take into consideration the added pollution in logistics and disposal of these vehicles.
We are in essence incentivising “buy use and throw away” and are calling it environmental. Long gone are the days where people looked for a machine that should last, today we buy battery powered Prius’s that are near disposable after a very finite life expectancy and loaded down with 450 pounds of batteries that are highly polluting once needed recycled. And it's all done so we can be “green.”
Whats most disturbing about this is the way it parallels the process the Nazis used to indoctrinate soldiers by slowly removing their inhibitions to destruction. Do you think that the guys destroying these cars across the nation now wont soon be visiting our neighborhoods?
“to satisfy a radical Socialist president...”
I agree with you - but IMHO this is also another payoff to the unions. Is the auto industry the only one in trouble? When the government does these kinds of things it usually doesn’t end well, and there are often unintended consequences. On strictly a personal level, I think it is foolish to destroy something that still works. It’s just plain wasteful. Sorry if that sounds old fashioned but our modern financial wizards haven’t delivered us our financial Utopia yet. I ain’t holding my breath.-—JM

Here's the irony! A truck like a Silverado which you reference with it's V-8 will run virtually forever, while all the plastic knobs and interior decompose after time. People get tired of their vehicle and they want a new style, color, and simply the smell of a new car. Better yet, junk like a Prius which will not make 200,000 miles gets these great reviews in reliability bla bla bla, while a vehicle like a Silverado won't, because none of these so called “reliability” tests or evaluations look out that far. Most of the car reviews are more engrossed with some bell and whistle, some new technological master piece in marketing, than they are in describing what machine is built to last, is really safe, can haul a fifth wheel camper with no problem, performs decent off road, has enough head room for a man 6'3”.............. If I were gay, had no kids, lived in a city, had no hobbies that took me out of the city, I guess that Prius would sound attractive.......
Classic obama/Pelosi: provide incentives for massive waste ... and send the bill to our children. They should be ashamed of themselves again.
What blows me away is why someone would let a car like that go for 4500$?! It was worth more if the former owners had privately sold it.
And that car was by no means a clunker. This is just a program thats being miss used. I can see someone selling a 1076 pos in this program, not a Volvo that likely got 25 MPG anyway!
STUPID program that isn’t going to do a damn bit of good.
what is next.....maybe some old smelly books, that need burning....maybe some old homes in down town America, that need destroying...the radical, Jackals are at the door....
I still drive a 1985 Dodge ram. I could use the parts. And I have a 1985 Bronco. Those are both very desirable vehicles in Arkansas, and I am one of the elite here.
parsy.
Yeah, they coulda parked that in an alley and given refuge to several bums! What are these people thinking?
