Need advice on starter firearm
self | 7/21/2009 | drew

Posted on 07/21/2009 2:27:38 PM PDT by drew

I'm looking for a good starter firearm (a good one to start with, not a starter's pistol). What would be a good choice for a handgun for protection, security, etc. Thanks!

I have to agree that a shotgun is the one to start with.

Home defense or concealed carry?

Home defense - Mossberg or Remington pump.

Concealed carry? .357 - you can shoot either .38 or .357.

It all depends where you need protection. I have shotguns for home protection. They clear the hallways very nicely, plus, you do not risk shooting a high powered bullet through the walls into your neighbors house. I also have handguns for backup.

Pistols are jsut another way to get yourself a rifle or a machinegun.

Get youself a decent battle rifle and work, work, work the AQT.

Start with a revolver. Smith and Wesson is fine. The reason I say this is that it is reliable and won’t jam due to inexperienced operation or cleaning.
Reloading the six rounds is simple too.
Don’t be lured by the promise of capacity with magazines. That can come with increased experience as you move up.

Start simple with what is reliable. Always.

If you are a novice shooter, take a gun safety course and get your shooting skills up with a .22, then try several types of larger caliber (with a coach or knowledgeable friends) and don't buy until you know what feels right and what you don't like. As you become familiar with the different types, you will be able to answer your own question better.

Form, fit, function, and firepower are your criteria.

It’s really to impossible to answer such a vague question.

The best pistol for you depends on a lot of factors. I would recommend taking an NRA 10 hour pistol course first (Google NRA pistol course for one near you) and think carefully about why you want a firearm.

Whatever you get, join a rod and gun club and get out there and practice, practice, practice.

I know it’s stock advice, but find a local range that rents guns, take some lessons, and try them out until you find the one that fits the best. It won’t be what your neighbor or your friends or the guy in the next lane over like. There are no right answers.

For a beginner, I would recommend a 4”-5” barreled revolver chambered for .357 Magnum, which can also fire the lesser and CHEAPER .38 Secial rounds for practice, plinking, etc. That way, you learn on a simple, safe, easy-to-operate gun, and have a quieter, softer load (.38) for practice, and a sledgehammer cartridge (.357) when you can handle it.

Starter questions:
1. For strictly home/office or to carry?
2. One user or two or more?
3. City or rural?
4. Any other uses other than security/protection?
5. Will you realistically practice with it frequently, rarely, never?
6. Will you take formal lessons to start?
7. What’s the budget?
8. Are there unusual legal restrictions where you live, ie are you in NYC, DC, Chicago or California?
