He’s still an American soldier in a hostile country and whatever he may or may not have done is irrelevant. He deserves rescue and prayer.

True, but what if he was a traitor American soldier? How does that work itself out?

This COL Peters fellow needs some education - it's okay to talk that way within the unit, but that kind of talk is never to leave the unit.

Exactly. H’s still a US son in enemy hands. Maybe Peters would like to explain his position to the Bergdahl’s family. Maybe he feels the same way about the two American females being held in N. Korea.

Ralph needs to pit a cork in it until ALL of the facts are in evidence.

Really bad form, Ralph.

Peters: “Nobody in the military is defending this guy, he is an apparent deserter, reports are indeed that he abandoned his buddies, abandoned his post and walked off...On that video he is collaborating with the enemy...He’s lying about how he was captured saying he lagged behind a patrol, Julie I’ll tell you, any 11 bravo infantryman will tell you, that’s not how it works, in a war zone any soldier is aware here of where his buddies are, if it’s a night patrol, you’re sure of where the guy in front of and behind you is, so we know that private is a liar....

“But if he walked away from his post and his buddies in wartime, I don’t care how hard it sounds, as far as I’m concerned the Taliban can save us a lot of legal hassles and a lot of legal bills”

Julie Banderas Responds: “Regardless of what the situation is, we do not want to see any U.S. soldier in harms way, and we hope that this guy gets out of there safely, he’s an American, he’s one of ours”

If this man deserted, he needs to be rescued. No-one deserves the fate he now faces.

If he deserted (which I’m not willing to accept until it is officially determined) it is still not the enemy’s place to make that judgment or issue punishment.

We are the United States. We don't live under sharia law and we do not need Muslim fanatics from another country to punish US soldiers for their misdeeds. This soldier needs to be rescued and then tried by a US military court if he deserted.

I've been reading Ralph Peters' columns since 9/11 and usually find his views to be interesting and intelligent. This is an obvious exception.

How could he possibly be a deserter in Afghanistan, where's he going to go? It doesn't make since.

I missed that, but I saw Lt. Col Peters talking to one of the Fox & Friends stand-ins saturday morning and they were talking about the F-22. Peters was saying the F-22 program should be scrapped, it’s a waste of money like some other failed weapons programs should have been scrapped earlier. The reporter agreed and said there should be a law against retired Generals working for contracters after retirement. Anyone know if the F-22 program is in that bad of shape?

Running through a few of the comments on this thread, I think we mostly agree. He’s an American and we want him back.

We can deal with any “issues” he may have in our own way.

I think Peters’ wig’s a bit tight. Or maybe it’s all that slick hair gel he’s been sporting lately.

Yup. Bring him home and hand him off to the Courts Martial if necessary. But never leave one of our own to the animals intentionally.

I agree with Lt. Col. Peters, if any American soldier is captured while abandoning his post during wartime, we shouldn’t take him back.

Before I went off to Iraq, my father told me that I was not to bring shame upon my country, my unit or my family. That I should never to be taken alive.

He also told me that when he flew any combat missions he considered himself a dead man, so until I came home I was consider myself a dead man.
