I used to be a big fan of Peggy Noonan. I thought that her columns were thoughtful, eloquant, and had a way with the English language. Her seeming understanding of the world and of Conservatism was always enjoyable, and I looked forward to her weekly columns.
All of that started to change after the 2004 election. While still writing good columns, she seemed off her game. As the 2008 campaign heated up last fall, she started to show tendencies of elitism, denigrating Sarah Palin and swooning over Barack Obama. Now, in her latest column, she viciously attacks Sarah Palin, calling her a very nice middle class girl with ambition who wasnt thoughtful enough to know that she wasnt thoughtful. Noonan goes on to claim that Palin was not ready for national politics, and never would be.
Noonan appears to know everything about Sarah Palin, and assumes from that fact that Palin is a bimbo with no brain. Her article is dripping with condescension, and claims that Palin was a product of the Republican elite. Rather, it is the Republican elite who is against her, and who thwarted her.

I’m betting that it’s her upper west-side environs. From what I’ve read, she very seldom sets foot out of her cloistered Manhattan circle, so how could she maintain a conservative sensibility?
The liberal Dems are scared to death of any conservative who is intelligent and charming and who really cares about keeping the USA a republic.
Bump. Couldn’t agree more. I keep reading her stuff to hopefully prove I’m wrong about her, but alas, I keep being right. She is an insider snob. There comes a time when the “experts” don’t know as much as we, who reside outside the bubble. That time is now.
Gee, why can’t Palin be smart like the 57 states First Reader, PromPtuS? Or like VP Biden, the smartypants?
I think what nails Peggy as PDS deranged, is her description of Sarah as “not working class” because her father was a school teacher and her mother a school secretary (and husband a union oifield worker and commercial fisherman?)
No, according to Peggy, Governor Palin is not “working class” but “middle class”- a “nice girl” (age 45) who knows no personal restraint
This article not only drips, it reeks
Peggy’s nose got put out of joint the week Reagan died, and she’s been blowing it ever since...
She’s the leader of the Whack Pack...conservative writers like LTGF’S Johnson, David Frum, David Brooks who went retarded left in an instant and started attacking their fellow conservatives and libertarians.
They were weak-minded people after all...
Just have to jump in with my 2 cents...
I never liked Peggy one bit. DH tried to convince me she was brilliant. Sure, she has some ability to put words and sentences together, but I’ve only ever seen her as a big bag of air who loved the tickled ears she gave herself.
Elitist from the first. People without humility show themselves easily. And they are the ones who P*** me off the most.
What she treasured most about Uncle Ronnie were the speeches she wrote for him.
Ye ken have yer soapbox back now. Thankee fer the use of it.
Agree 100%. And here’s the lesson: Noonan simply proves that elitists come in all sizes, shapes, colors, and political parties. Whether you call them Statists, Elitists, Intellectuals, Secular Progressives or whatever - Sarah Palin has served as the litmus test that proves this is a battle between traditional American values that have made this country great — and these elite snobs who think they are smarter and better than the rest of us.
Go to Hell, Peg, I’m supporting Sarah, and I am never again gonna support the likes of you or anyone that you support.
Dittos. I started noticing the change many years ago after she initially left the Maryland burbs for good and started staying in Manhattan year round.
You are on to her, Wife. And, as you said,”What she treasured most about Uncle Ronnie were the speeches she wrote for him.”
After he got the speeches Noonan wrote, Pres. Reagan personally edited them heavily.
This is a woman who is in love with herself and tries to make herself relevant even though her time has come and gone.
i saw this article this morning and decided that i may not renew my wsj.
this is the 2nd time noonan has attacked sarah.
The first time I ever saw her was years ago on some Fox program, the one with Judith Regen (sp?). Anyway, she was discussing a book or something, and she did not look at the camera or at Regen even once. Instead, she had one of those condescending type auras, where she’d look up, down, wherever else, like she was too good to relate to the rest of the world.
Despite her great speechwriting ability, I never liked her after that. And I like her even less now.
D shoulda listened to ya sooner, so should we!
Peggy creams her panties for 0bummer.
Peggy Noonan has been doing nothing but passing gas for the last 10+ years.
It turned out that Noonan was right about Palin. Or at least most Americans agreed with her, including me. Altho Palin generated some excitement at the beginning, she doomed the Republicans to losing, once she opened her mouth. She clearly wasn’t VP material, or anywhere close. She’s a nice gal. She’d be great as a small town mayor. But she’s not knowledgeable or focused enough to lead a country, by a long shot. No one with a brain voted for that ticket, once she was put on it. McCain might’ve lost, anyway, but he’d have had a shot if he’d named a serious VP who could’ve been President, if necessary (like Romney, just to pick a name...Romney, incidentally, would’ve won the ticket for the Republicans, I believe, because as it turns out...the economy became the big issue, and that was Romney’s strong point).
So you can criticize Noonan, but she was merely reflecting what most people in the country were thinking. She wasn’t attacking. She was stating the obvious. She didn’t call her names or make fun of her. She was respectful, but honest.
Palin will never be in the White House. I’m baffled by the group that seems to think she has the right stuff to do that sort of thing. She hasn’t even stayed a full term at anything, or solved a financial crisis, or resolved a serious problem. She quit as mayor. She quit as a councilwoman. She quit as governor. She’d be great with a talk show, though. That is her background.
