It is not surprising that MSNBC's resident bigot, Pat Buchanan, is a supporter of accused Nazi, John Demjanjuk. Buchanan has made a career of being a Holocaust denying Israel hater. Buchanan has challenged the historical record that thousands of Jews were gassed to death by diesel exhaust at Treblinka: "Diesel engines do not emit enough carbon monoxide to kill anybody." -New Republic, 10/22/90

Buchanan has been a long time defender of John Demjanjuk, the former SS Guard accused of being Ivan the Terrible. As Demjanjuk deportation from the US neared its climax, he wrote an essay comparing Demjanjuk to Alfred Dreyfus, one of history's most egregious examples of Anti-Semitism.
In today's Human Events, former writer for the National Review, Joseph A. Rehyansky, takes on Buchanan as only someone who has walked in the same circles can:

MSNBC and PBS keep Pat on their show as the “conservative” voice. Disgusting. They fail to note that Pitchfork Pat bolted the Republican Party and got into bed with that Falani woman who was an avowed Socialist.
Pat is their token “bigot” in order to remind everyone that he is like the rest of the GOP.
If John Demjanjuk was truly the evil war crminal as some allege, why was his conviction in an Israeli court subsequently overturned by Israel’s highest court and he was released and returned to the U.S.? Did that not settle the matter? Why subject the man to double jeopardy? Is that fair? How could an eighty nine year old senile man confined to a wheelchair be expected to mount a vigorous defense? Who among the survivors could positively identify him as a war criminal?
The Israeli court determined that he was not “Ivan the Terrible”, it did not absolve him of all crimes. This is not double jeopardy, it is new charges brought by a different sovereign. This is the same principle that allows someone acquitted in a state proceeding to face different charges in Federal Court.
Is he senile? I don’t know. Is he confined to a wheelchair? Apparently not, as he was filmed walking to his car recently.
Do we allow criminals to escape from prosecution because they have achieved a certain age?
Was he really a war criminal throwing people into gas chambers or was he in reality a low level camp guard guarding a fence? The Israeli Supreme Court seemed very skeptical of the more serious charges.
Demjanjuk’s conviction, reversed by the High Court of Israel, was for being a guard, nicknamed ‘Ivan the Terrible’, and who engaged in atrocities, at the death camp at TREBLINKA.
West Germany wants to try him for exterminations that occurred when he was allegedly part of the guard detachment at SOBIBOR. Two different camps. Two different locations. Two sets of victims. Two sets of crimes.
Why now after all these years? Is there new, credible evidence? If so, what?
According to the article, Demjanuk listed Sobibor as a residence. There’s evidence he was trained at Trewinki, an SS facility for training subject people’s guards for SS camps. Sobobor was a straight up [like Treblinka] extermination camp. Very little forced labor. If Demjanuk was a guard there, they can nail him on a conspiracy/ RICO type theory. I believe that’s what they’re going with - on 29,000 counts of murder.
I assume the West Germans held off in deference to Israel, which wanted to try him because the Israelis thought he was Ivan, who individually [I believe] killed inmates. Once he was sentenced to death, there was no reason for West Germany to try him [no death penalty]. The reversal of his conviction put everything back on the table.

If Demjanjuk was a “Nazi” then all of the Jewish Kapos were “Nazis” as well.
I know Buchanan is no lover of Israel, but I’ve never heard him deny the Holocaust. Did I miss something?
Maybe two things can be true: (1) Demjanjuk was not Ivan the Terrible and (2) Buchanan is a fake conservative.
Then why didn’t the Israelis arrest and try him for those crimes?
The conviction overturned in Israel was that Demjanjuk was Ivan the Terrible.

It settled the matter of whether he was Ivan the Terrible. He was not.
Why subject the man to double jeopardy?
He is not being subjected to double jeopardy. If you think he is, tell us who intends to try him for being Ivan the Terrible.

Absolutely.

Assuming facts not in evidence: senile? Prove it.
Who among the survivors could positively identify him as a war criminal?
A trial will determine this.
That false dichotomy is not the test for "war criminal.

There is no statute of limitations for murder.

Put it to a jury and if he is guilty, convict him.
Then every aging low level camp guard who served the Axis Powers could be considered a war criminal and must be hunted down.
The Chinese Communists and the USSR especially under Mao and Stalin murdered millions upon millions more than the Nazis ever did. Why not a concerted effort to bring their camp commandants and camp guards to justice?
Why doesn’t our federal government go after and deport the thousands of illegal aliens here in this country who are currently committing crimes in this country?
I personally think the priorities are really freaked up. There are thousands of illegal aliens living here in my own city, joining violent gangs, killing people, defacing neighborhoods with graffiti, selling drugs to school children.
Our federal government has no problem apprehending and deporting an eighty nine year old man, but will NOT lift a finger to deport these violent thugs who are terrorizing our cities.
