Last month, I read Lorenzo Benet's unauthorized biography of Sarah Palin, "Trailblazer," and this week I watched John Ziegler's complete interview with Sarah Palin.
The question I asked myself after finishing both is the same question I've been asking myself since August 29, 2008: Who is Sarah Palin?
Many who know her say that she is exactly the person that she appears to be. And, yet, no one is ever quite what they appear because they appear to be many things to many people. A person as complex and intriguing as Sarah Palin is certainly not that simple. However, complexity does not imply cunning or deceptive manipulation. A person can be honest, straightforward, and completely without guile and yet still be complex.
I've been fascinated by biographies and biography writing my entire life. One my favorite books on the topic is Janet Malcolm's "The Silent Woman." Malcolm tries to get to the truth behind the poet Sylvia Plath, and in my opinion comes closer than anyone else, by revealing the agendas of the biographers writing about Plath. Every biographer molds the biographical subject to fit a vision or agenda. Recognizing that is key to reading a biography objectively. We sign on to the biographer's vision, and we allow ourselves to either agree or disagree with that vision.
Lorenzo Benet's "Trailblazer" was compelling, but no thanks to any talent on his part. It was compelling because Palin is compelling. Benet is not a particularly gifted or imaginative writer. The book is little more than a compilation of various news stories supplemented by interviews. That's certainly not a bad thing. All modern mass market biographies are little more than Nexus Lexus compilations.

SO...we have a potential 2102 Presidential candidate who's truly Conservative by all standards of the definition, and who also has the charisma, youth, and drive to match Obama, and you think its ludicrous to suport and promote her on this CONSERVATIVE forum?????
Unbelievable.
I expect we will see her doing just that in 2010 with numerous candidates, and that she will win the GOP primaries in 2012 and go on to be the first woman President of these United States.
She will have my vote and whole hearted support in this effort.
I expect that the contrast between what she accomplishes as the first woman President starting in 2012, and what Barack Hussein Obama is doing as the first black President here in 2009, could not be more telling and extreme.
GO SARAH GO!
I just finished watching the State of the State address Sarah gave in Jan of 09. She is so compelling,so thoughtful and intelligent, and has such a clear vision of what she wants to do and where she wants the state to go.I can’t WAIT till ‘12!!
Excuse me. Isn't this a DISCUSSION BOARD?
I guess Sarah isn't your candidate, huh?
Counting the seconds until it turns into a Palin bash fest.
Since you brought it up, please give a side by side comparison of how Jindal is more conservative than Palin.
Palin is more a cultural phenomena that political. Apart from her views, I think a lot of us liked being able to relate to someone running for high office. Not a multi-millionaire Ivy League lawyer with 20 years in Washington, but someone who has lived a life we can recognize.
This is why the eastern establishment ‘conservatives’ HATE her - because she ISN’T one of them. She went to a public university? More than one? Why did she do a beauty pageant to get a scholarship - why not just tap into Daddy’s trust fund? You mean, she didn’t have one? OMG! We can’t have a yokel like that running things. We need the Lords of the Universe, who have run things so well for 100 years...
You’re too late, it started way back on post #14.
There are some who supported another Republican that are still jealous that Palin push their guy right off the radar screen.
If you have already picked a candidate for 2012, that’s your problem not mine. These continuous four campaigns are ridiculous and vulgar. They distract us from the business at hand and are subject to numerous ebb and flow of future events. Stop turning the presidential campaigns to so many TMZ stories.
four-year
And it isn’t even 2011 yet.
For good or for ill, the Messiah has changed the way politics is played. As soon he was sworn in January 2009, he embarked on his re-election bid for 2012. He is campaign mode forever. Is this Change we don’t believe in?
So, newbie, what exactly is the business at hand?

I have been here for 10 years, buzz off. If you don’t know what’s going on, have one of your friends explain it to you or read threads on other topics.
10 years, huh? Your posting history says otherwise, noob. Are you a re-tread?
I believe I’ll reserve my endorsement of which candidate I’ll vote for until more time has passed. If you want to lock and load, I guess you can do so. Try to tread lightly. Some of us are dealing with more current issues.
Are you a disrespectful idiot?
What you said is so true. You can’t believe how many posts are devoted to the idea. “I don’t want to think about politics now, the election is over.”
If Sarah wants to run for POTUS she must decide soon whether it is worth it. If she decides to wait until 2011 it may be too late. But in the final anaysis it all comes down to money. How long can SarahPAC raise millions and millions of dollars for her cause without her officially declaring for the Presidency?
AWESOME! Thank you for sharing. It was long but insightful.
