Photo: sea levels actually lower than 1841!

Global warming alarmists promote several hysterical themes including "rising sea levels". The supposedly rising oceans are "evidence" of the catastrophic effect of humans on global temperatures. Problem is, like most anthropogenic global warming (AGW) marketing, it's an utter fabrication.

I blame the Dutch and their aggressive land grab tactics.

this is from about the time when Greenland was Flooded entirely! In the 16th Century I believe...

?????? Greenland certainly hasn't been flooded in the last 50,000 years.

That works for the arctic because that is ice in water. There is no land up there. But for Antarctica, the ice is sitting on land for a major portion of the ice.

But to the consternation of the global warming crowd, antarctic ice is expanding.

Which should mean that its dropping somewhere else.

I really don't have a clue. I does seem that I've read that it's rebounding faster in the south than the north though.

De-Salinization plants are common in other parts of the world that have scare water resources.

As generators are common in areas unserved by an electical grid. California might get to the point of using de-salinization plants, but that should be about it.

Say, since the earth is a one piece thing, how could anything on or in enlarge
it unless it came from outer space and was added to the earth?

Silt alone can make a shoreline move a mile or more in quick order. Harlech Castle in Wales is a good example. When built, it was on a cliff that fell into the sea. It is now a good mile walk to the ocean. Shorelines are far from static.

Put ice cubes in a glass of water and when the ice melts does the water run over? Duh!

While that is certainly true, it does not hold for ice that is supported by underlying dirt or stone. Such "supported" ice, mainly Greenland and Antarctica, does have the potential to cause a rise in mean sea level if it were to melt.

GtG

Say, since the earth is a one piece thing, how could anything on or in enlarge
it unless it came from outer space and was added to the earth?

No. It's definitely not a “one piece” thing.

Each continental land mass is a block of trillions of tons of various rocks, “floating” on the crust below. Because each major block is separate, they can move - which gives us (over hundreds of millions of years) the continental drift and mountain-building we see in many places. If one side of the continental block is moving east, the other is also moving east, but it may be rising up over the other land mass, or falling (going under) the other land mass. Mid-ocean, the crust is differently constructed of usually different rocks, but those rocks masses are either spreading (as in the middle of the Atlantic, or coming together (getting pushed under one another as in the deep rifts of Indonesia.

Either movement (spreading or getting pushed under creates earthquakes. Volcanoes. Lava flows.

Locally, the “continental raft” might be going “up” (sea level apparently receding) or “down” (sea level apparently increasing. I say “apparently” going up or down because it only looks like the ocean level is changing. What's really changing over time is the “land level.”

What the global warming hysterics are claiming is that either Greenland or Antarctica (or both) are going to melt as temperatures rise. (A false assumption, by the way.) Also, they claim that an increase in temperature will cause ocean temperatures to rise, oceans waters to expand, and so ocean levels to go up. Thus “flooding everybody” and killing millions...

(Of course, this became a more popular claim after Katrina. After the democrat LA rulers killed their own people through incompetence and greed.)

Any given island may go up or down as the continental shelf underneath its base goes up and down. Erosion removes land mass. Pumping water (as in Baytown in the mid-70’s) or oil or salt water out of the ground changes elevation.

But. The amount of temperature rise they claim will occur is false. The amount of ice melt is false. The amount of ocean increase is false. The threat is false.

Why in the hell would the sea rise anyway?

Put ice cubes in a glass of water and when the ice melts does the water run over? Duh!

What you say would make sense if all the ice that might melt was floating in the sea. But this is not true. There is a huge volume of ice on land on the Antarctic continent and in Greenland. Also a lot of the ice that is offshore Antarctica is not floating but is resting on the seabed. If this ice melts it *will* raise the level of the oceans.

Imagine that instead of a few cubes of ice in your glass of water, there is a chunk of ice that is so big and heavy that it rests on the bottom of your glass and also pokes above the liquid. If the glass is initially filled to the brim, it will overflow when the ice melts.

Still skeptical? Imagine that you just keep piling ice higher and higher in your drink. Don't you think there is going to be a point when it there will be enough ice that it will make the drink overflow when it melts? In fact you will get overflow with melting anytime you add enough ice to your drink so that it is resting on the bottom.

True but there is a substantial amount of ice on land. Hence the sea levels would rise if that ice melted.

Please look at Rye england the coastline is One Mile from the Original shore!

Apparently this is due to the silting-up of a bay and has nothing to do with the decline of the ocean level.

Nobody ever explains why Greenland was under water in the Leif erickson Times

Because that is not true.

Ice cubes in water, does the water run over?

That is all very well for the ice that is already in the water, but the ice in Greenland and large areas of Antarctica are above sea level. If they melt, and Greenland has a lot of people worried, then it does increase sea level. Also if sea water is warmer, it expands and raises sea level a bit. This winter in the mid Atlantic has been colder than for the past several years, but hardly as cold as it was 30 and 40 years ago when I first started living here. On the other hand Australia had 120 degree temps before the fires which were not helped by the 12 year drought they have been having.
