“Buy American” Bill Touted
A Semi-News/Semi-Satire from AzConservative ^ | 30 Jan 2009 | John Semmens

Posted on 02/01/2009 12:15:56 PM PST by John Semmens

Senator Byron Dorgan (D-ND) has proposed a “buy American” requirement be inserted into the “stimulus” bill. “If we can stop people from buying imports, they’ll have to buy from US companies,” Dorgan said. “This will boost employment here, rather than exporting it overseas.”

Dorgan recalled that “one of the first steps America took to fight the Great Depression was passage of 1930’s Smoot-Hawley tariff. Of course, this bill by itself wasn’t enough to turn the tide, but it was part of a comprehensive program of government measures adopted by both the Republican Hoover Administration and Democratic Roosevelt Administrations to combat the downturn. To make the President’s stimulus package more effective, I feel a similar disincentive for imports is needed.”

Most economists credit Smoot-Hawley for dampening global trade in the 1930s and helping lay the economic foundations for the global conflict known as World War II.

In related news, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif) explained that the federal funding for abortions included in the “stimulus” bill would “help alleviate the stress to hard-pressed families by eliminating unnecessary mouths to feed.”

The libs insist on having the government, not the market, choose the winners and losers.

Buy American is empty feel good rhetoric. The facyt is there’s not much American to buy because we closed all our factories to import the cheap crap made in China.

I will gladly buy American, if someone will show me what America still makes.

just wow.
this means they don’t want to solve it, they want to keep us there and have us kill their upcoming citizenry while immigrants continue to come in and give birth at an alarming rate and taxpayers pay for it.

Dumb protectionist rats, in a global economy, no way to put that back in the bottle.

Why not we cut corporate taxes and give tax incentives to companies to locate in America instead of patronizing outdated union thugs and their stupid ideas. Just because the union thugs gave $500 million to elect Obama, the country should not be swayed.

China is having their own problems. So what happens if the Chinese people abandon the cities and return to the land? Who is going to make the world’s crap?

So am I a bad person because I prefer BMW? They do have a plant here in the U.S. Of course it is in the south so Michigan probably thinks it is still a foreign car.

Are products like Apple considered foreign if they use over seas manufacturing?

I dont think so. Apple creates tons of jobs here. and we keep the best jobs stateside.

And we do manufacture some really great stuff here in the USA.

America still leads the world in innovation.

I’d say no, but the only BMW I truly desire (the M3) is still built in Germany.

It is only common sense that any money the government spends should be spent on American products and American firms.

That was my first thought. What is there "American" left to buy? Vegetables from FL and CA that were picked by illegals who send money back to Mexico and Guatemala and take their children for free health care that most Americans can't even get?

A dress and shoes would be nice.
In the clothes dept jeans and t-shirts are about all one can find that are made still here.
99% of shoes sold here are foreign made, and those still made here are work boots, cowboy boots and trainers. I am a girly girl and I seldom wear jeans, never wear work or cowboy boots.

Trust me, I have been looking.
